"$157-$30=$124"

There is something about that math that doesn't seem right to me....

Nice deal JackMDS (& nice upsell spamdini!)

I did the deal a little differently...

Fireball AS ($142) plus 2 Startech 80mm Case Fans ($10)
Less Coupon (-$30), Less Rebate (-$30)

Gives me a 30GB 7200rpm ATA100 harddrive for $92
(& two "free" case fans to play with)

Thanks guys!

Sweet!

Hate to break it to you DugnDog but you ain't getting your rebate. Your deal looked pretty good so I checked it out and the rebate only applies to the Fireball Plus AS hard drives. Be carful guys or you'll get burned.

I don't see that quantum makes a non-plus version of this drive (the AS). Most companies don't have it listed as plus feature. Can anyone shed some light on whether this rebate will fly?

Hmmm... Looking up the Buy.com product description

Title is 30GB EIDE ULTRA-ATA/100 3.5LP 7200RPM 8.5MS FIREBALL AS

Description - For the highest performance on the desktop, Quantum Fireball Plus AS drives set a new standard in ...

So maybe? Odd that they aren't promoting the rebate though.

Looking further, Buy.com advertises the Quantum 40GB under computer storage:

Quantum 40GB Fireball Plus AS Drive
For the highest performance on the desktop, Quantum Fireball Plus AS drives set a new standard in capacity, performance, acoustics, and reliability. Besides traditional CAD/CAM, desktop publishing, DVD, multimedia and financial modeling applications, power users are accessing e-commerce, participating in online gaming, downloading MP3 files and more, making Fireball? Plus AS drives the best choice. This drive comes with a $35 Rebate!

When you click on the title, it takes you to the following:

40GB EIDE ULTRA-ATA/100 3.5LP 7200RPM 8.5MS FIREBALL AS
Mfg part#: QMP40000AS-A (part# for 30GB is QMP30000AS-A)
Description - For the highest performance on the desktop, Quantum Fireball Plus AS drives set a new standard in ...

Same item description, same part numbering, and the rebate form specifically lists Buy.com as an approved vender for the rebates. So I think I'm OK, I'm going to let mine ride.

Side Note: I notice one wierd thing is that the rebate doesn't ask for upc code, just the form and copy of receipt. I wonder if they're cross-checking against e-mail address or something?

To those considering the Quantum AS drive instead of the Plus LM

I would go here and check out their review on the AS versus the LM. The LM is one of the fastest ATA/66 drives ever made, in terms of seek time, which is what makes your programs load and when accessing the drive, how long the drive takes to find the information. This is where your performance comes in. The Plus LM series is quite a bit faster than the newer AS, even though I'm sure Quantum was trying to improve upon their old design. I own the LM drive myself and I LOVE this hard drive. It's better than the Maxtor's I've used and comparable to the IBM Deskstar GXP series. For those of you who want the best deal, stick with the LM.

Got the 30gig AS today. Sweet. This is the Quantum Fireball Plus AS ergo is acceptable for rebate. Buy did not list it as such, but thats what it is. So, lets recap,
30 gig Fireball Plus AS 141.95
Palm V stylus 3 pack 8.95
coupon -30
subtotal 120.90
MIR -30

90.90 no complaints. minus the 8.95 for the stylus= 2.73/gig

Sandra reported 22016 for drive benchmark (not that this means anything, just much better and less noise than my old WD AC34300).

No cable, no manual, not even a stinkin' floppy with utilities which are available at quantums site.

I'm a novice at ATA and can use some help!

Would I have to buy a seperate card/cable with this drive, or can I use my normal IDE interface that I have with my older EIDE drive???

Thanks!!!

yea, you'll need a ata/66 cable, if you use normal ide cable, you only get the ata/33 speed...

Hey2: Unless your computer is fairly new, you likely only have an ATA/33 interface on your motherboard. This drive will still work for you, but it will only run at ATA/33, not ATA/66 or ATA/100.

You can get a Promise Ultra 66 (ATA/66) controller card AND cable from Onvia for about $20 shipped. It's the card I use (with this very drive), and setup was a cinch. Another plus of getting a card: It will control 4 more devices. So if you're like me and have all sorts of drives jammed into your computer, you'll need something like this sooner or later anyway.

Feel free to drop my a private msg if you need any help setting the drive up. This is a VERY bare drive -- the only thing in the box is the drive itself. No cables, no disks. But it's really easy to get up and running.
