Quality vs Perception of Quality

amazing. i know for a fact that systems i build for my clients are on par with if not much better than anything that dell sells and yet, consistently my clients ask for dell.

me, i don't care to much as i make my money on services anyway.

so, of my 35 clients or so, i've built machines for only one of them.

if i buy them a dell and it is delivered (happens quite often lately) with a bad Power Supply, or misfitting parts etc, the customer never says to me, "Why did you recommend Dell". they assume that it is normal to have bad parts sent to them.

if i had built them a machine and the SAME problem arose, it would be "WTF didn't you buy me a dell".

amazing.

i wonder how much of this applies to quality in automobiles. 😉

The idea of building a comp sounds very sketchy and unreliable to most people... reputation goes a long way for companies like Dell.

Word of mouth goes a long way as well. And let's face it, dell makes a pretty good computer.

Perceptions are often based on past performance.

Dell has gone downhill from their days of building rock solid machines, but people cling to their perceptions from the past.

I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to assume that Dell's got more resource in QA than you do. So you say your machine's better. How? Faster? The parts you selected are more durable/reliable? And where's the documentation to prove that?

I'm not one to call someone a liar, but I work with just about every system they make on a daily basis and that is just a false statement.

haha we're learning about this in marketing. marketing = selling perception to the customers.

you mentioned cars...think about it...no matter what car you get, it's made of parts sold to the lowest bidder, with the cheapest possible design. they're just plastic illusions. the whole "cool" factor is in your head.

my marketing class is really changing my perceptions, it's like learning and understanding physics, the wall pushes back on your etc.

oh snap

Next time have your shotgun loaded and ready behind the counter. If they ask that stupid dell question again, shoot them in the face.

I like mine. I have two 4600s and my mom has a 2200. Zero problems. Maybe we just got lucky 🙂

small + quiet + cheap + stable =

Lol, I love the "well, duh, of course" comments from the same people who'll defend apple/ipod to the death

because i usually have them order directly from dell. they are more comfortable because they want to feel like i'm not "cheating" them by making any money on the hardware. (and i don't, like i really give a sh1t about the 5% i MIGHT make off dells. 🙁 )

my assembly is better. dell might QA for better parts, but their assemly is for sh1t.

i see a lot of dells. i also have 2 friends that own local PC shops, guess what, almost 1/3 of the machines that come into their shops are Dells. and their assembly quality is horrible.

Meh, their target consumer is someone who doesn't know much about computers, yet, to get a stable working dell you have to be computer literate (the reinstall windows to get rid of imbedded bloat, spyware, updates ect ect) Then there is the hadrware which sometimes needs intervention.
