Quality sound card for 2.1 speaker setup....

I have a Klipsch 2.1 Promedia setup currently. I've been using onboard sound for a while, but it's old Shuttle onboard "AC ?97". It does supports 5.1 channel and digital SPDIF In/Out.

My question is, will I notice a difference in sound quality by getting a $50-$100 5.1 or 7.1 channel soundcard?

I don't care much about gaming, I was just wondering if getting a 7.1 channel will be overkill, or if getting a 5.1 card will be worth it (given I already have 5.1 support)....

Thanks all.

Yes, you will notice a big difference. Getting a 7.1 or 5.1 sound card will be a great buy. If your not really into gaming, but like high quality sound go with the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 card.

Ok, so 5.1 and 7.1 doesn't mean that they are designed specifically for 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setups? That's why I was a bit hesitant, being that I have only a 2.1 setup, thought it'd be overkill 😕. But I guess now I'll take a harder look at possible 5.1 and 7.1 sound cards, thanks.....

Yea. I am using creative live 5.1 with 4.1 speakers and they have been great.
I paid $33 year ago.
Planning to upgrade spakers soon.

Get the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I have the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's and the Santa Cruz and I LOVE my audio setup. It's exceptional for music and excellent for games as well. The Promedias have a port for headphones on the right satellite speaker, too, if you like to game that way.
