do you think the price/quality of shampoo matters? I know for long hair, using the right conditioner is crucial for good hair health, but i mean, it's just animal fat in a bottle, what difference can it make?

anyone have any suggestions/experiences? I am 21 years old with black wavey hair. thanks.

lots of gray hair @ 21? yikes. go to a salon and get it colored.

but if you don't want to do that for some reason try Suave coconut conditioner. i've tried all the salon sold hair conditioners (my gf is a hairdresser and sells them to me at cost), and i still say cheap ole Suave shampoos and conditioners make my hair the shiniest and the softest.

I have extremely thick, long hair. I find that generally any 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioners work worse than the separate shampoos and conditioners, no matter the price. That being said, I try to get stuff that's going to calm the frizz down without leaving a film. I don't like Garnier Fructis because it left my hair feeling greasy (others may, but I don't personally). My favorite line is John Frieda's "Straight Ahead". He has other lines that conform to different hair types that I have heard work great. Before I switched to Frieda, I used Dove shampoo and conditioner, which was also good (and smells wonderful!).

Good luck!

If it's short hair then it doesn't matter IMO but if it's long like yours then yes, it does.

My wife likes Garnier Fructis, which we get from Sams Club.

I recall seeing some hair dresser on tv saying that the shampoo didn't matter as much as making sure you rinsed the shampoo out completely.

I use Pert.
I have oily hair and it seems to work the best for me for the price.

Where's the master on this subject? Are there really any rules?

What are the factual reasons for differences in shampoo/conditioner?

It all seems like a bunch of witchcraft with no substance.

More like it's completely subjective. Everyone has different hair/scalp/pores/etc, so what works for one person my not work for another, even if they both have greasy hair (if the other stuff is different).

Just got to try everything until something works.

some women find my grey hair attractive  especially at this age

i don't think good scalp health will change the number of grey hair I have, it's genetic (for me at least)

I use Nexxus or Jcrew. From what I understand from my stylist (Boy that sounds metro) that Paul Mitchell is not very good, but Nexxus, Nioxin, and a few others are better. Also, you're only supposed to wash your hair maybe a couple of times a week to keep the natural oils on your scalp or in your hair.

I am not a metrosexual, but I do use good shampoo for my hair as I tend to keep it longer. I use Matrix Amplify- helps with body and fullness. Biolage is good stuff too.

i have somewhat long hair and i always get compliments on it by women and whenever i get it cut. i use... trader joe's shampoo, sparingly. more important than the shampoo is how much you use and how often. If I wash my hair everyday it becomes too dry even with expensive stuff.

Neutrogena T-Gel. I don't care if the state of California says it may cause cancer- it makes my psoriasis less itchy (and my head smell like coal tar).

I've tried Suave a few different times, and it always dries my scalp out and gives me dandruff/flakes.

I stick with Pantene 2 in 1 or Pert Plus. :shrug;

It really depends on the person. My wife's hair looks pretty bad if she uses the cheap shampoo that I use. I can get away with Suave or whatever brand it is that Aldis sells. She can't use it or her hair gets really dry looking.

For what it's worth though, there's more to it than simply "rinsing it all out." Different soaps and shampoos have different pH's. My wife (wound care nurse) finally thinks she's figured out why my hands dry out and crack so bad in the winter time - the soap we use has a pH of 9.5. Your hands naturally have an acidic pH. (5?) Time for me to carefully test out her theory.
