Quality of ~2 MP Digital Cameras?

I'm thinking of getting a Canon S10 (or S100) for christmas, and having had no prior experience with digital cameras would like to know about their quality of pictures. I've read all the reviews on both of these cameras, as well as many others, but none give references to what a paper printout will look like (if I go to a photo finishing store and have them printed professionaly).

I do not plan to print many pictures out, but would like to reserve the ability to if I do find the need. I've been under the impression that with a 1.2 MP camera, I should be able to have relativly good printouts with a 2.1 MP camera (@1600 res)...

Please, if you haven't had any experience with digital cameras, don't bother bashing them. Anybody else is welcome to post their input.

Also, as far as I am able to tell, both the S100 and S10 are virtually identical in every aspect other than the batteries they use and their size; am I correct?

I just got an s100. I finally got to play with it. Its a nice camera. I feel like im going to break it because its so small. The design is great and so are the pics. there are quite a few options to choose from when taking pics. The pics come out the way I expected them to clear and pretty large (1600x1200). I have yet to use the stitch option so dont know how that works. If you do end up buying either camera make sure to get a 64 meg flash card and a CF reader. The cf reader makes it so that you dont need to plug the camera into the comp every time you want to upload some pics. The usb cf reader I bought is also fairly quick. The 64 meg card is ncessary because the 8 meg one that comes with the camera is just not enough. You can only take 12 pics at medium quality and 4 at hi. If you have anymore questions feel free to email me. Ill be shotting tomorrow and can send you some pics.

HQ setting, using automatic Programable mode, I just got it few weeks ago and I still dont know what each setting does so when I take pictures I just set it to automatic.

Your 2.1 megapixel camera will do fine. My Kodak DC265 on medium setting (it's a 1.3 megapixel) prints out fine...

Well digital cameras suck😀!

I have an Olympus 490z. This is their point and shot 2.1 Mega Pixel camera. Very happy with the quality of the pictures. Your best bet is to figure out what exactly your going to do with the camera.

I also looked at the Canon S100. I picked the Oly 490z because it had a 3X optical zoom vs the 2X on the Canon. Optical zoom is always better then digital zoom. There are many DC review sites on the net. Here are two of them

Go crazy.

Zoom is a nice feature, but I think the durability and size of the Canon S10 is quite a nice feature as well. I am considering the Olympus, but the Fuji 2400 is also quite similar - but much cheaper than both of them...

2.1 MP will be OK. 16x12 is too big to view on a screen anyway.

However, for printing at a pro lab, 1600x1200 is not so hot. It would make for very good 5x7 prints, but at 8x10 it's really pushing it.

I have a 3 MP camera, and I take ALL my pictures at full resolution, just in case I want to print them. (I usually don't print them though.) 8x10s come out pretty well but only if the lighting is good. I have a Kodak DC4800.

🙂 I was able to find a great deal at a local store for a Canon S10 and all the goodies that don't normally come with it, so I bought it. The picture quality is quite excellent - I've not had a chance to take any spectacular pictures with it yet, but I'm looking forward to the next time I go skiing.
