is doom/quake still relavent?

they havent come up w/a sequel in years

Unfortunately, the newer generation has invaded with LoL, Smite, etc. There are still Quake Live tournaments, though.

The group of guys I go with still play Q2, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Red Alert, etc. and we have some of the older guys come up and ask to play as well.

Nope. Friends and I did go for years, but then when Bethesda bought iD they started turning it into a pay for event. Going against what Qcon was. It became a corporate event that was no longer community driven. Last year was our last year for it, and seeing by what they announced with FCFS we made the right call.

You don't have to pay, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about. My friends and I pay because 1) we want to help support the event and 2) don't want to wait in a long ass line. I wouldn't have a problem dropping $250 for my QDQ package - it's 4 days of fun. I've spent more than that for a ticket to a sporting event.

I will be going again this year. Slightly bummed about the seat registration system as mentioned, but for just 30 dollars I get a seat guaranteed next to all my clan m8's who are going, so its not too bad.

I am really looking forward to some doom 4 news.

They have something like 50 first come first serve seats this year (i.e. free seats). Everything else is the $30 select a seat deal. While I get that it's only $30, I think the quality of the event was better before Bethesda bought iD. My friends concur. Enjoy the event, but the money they make from the pay for seat crap has not enhanced the event at all.

Stop by and say hi, look for a sign that says SanAnLAN - I'm the only guy with a beard. We'll be sitting near the NOC.

you're missing out for $30.

I live in NE Ohio. It's a 20 hour drive (~1200 miles @ 30 mpg = 40 gal of gas * $3.70/gal = ~$150), a week hotel stay ($800 give or take a bit), and cost of food/etc. So it's more like $1500+$30 when you account for all the other costs associated with the event since my friends aren't going. Even if they were and it was $350 or so for the week by rooming and carpooling, it's still not worth it to me.

after having played a LOT (which is like a lot, but more) of QuakeLive, my opinion is that there is little interest for quake because (brace for nerd impact) other games are better.

Give an example of a game that's better in terms of DM.

Quake isn't about "unlocks" or "perks" or "leveling." It's about your skill and memory, that's why it's used in tourny's.

I'm surprised that they do not have a CandyCrushCon or a FarmVilleCon, considering that this seems to be where "gaming" is headed now :(

sorry but, no. quake's classic claim that quake is the best is proved by the fact that quake is the best. so keep playing quake. other people will play games which are "better".

(also, quake doesnt have DM. it has FFA, which is not used in tournaments. Duel is used in tournaments)

quake takes a minimum of five years of practice to learn; once you spend those five years, you realize that quake has no multiplayer strategy. the world has moved on from 1v1, since players who might be awesome (google: Strenx plays CA, then read the comments) at 1v1 will suck at teamplay.

i'm tired of games which consist solely of pointing your mouse at one pixel exactly. i'd rather play shooters which have depth.

We have some game video that I need to edit when I get home. We were sitting a back to back with some id staff, and then the CEO of Apogee and the Director of ROTT13 came over to talk to us because we were playing it.

It was fun, but it felt different without seeing all the people lined up.
