Back in the day a buddy over at hammertown.net ran 3 different Q2 servers, off a T1 on 3 P166s with 128 MB RAM - never any server lag. A Duron 600 could handle more than just 8 players. (No one is going to play on a 8 player server btw, unless its a private clan practice server)

AMD, so you can get both great performance and be able to afford more ram(though 256 should be plenty).

It would probably be cheaper getting a P3 if you are going for a KT7. It is an expensive board.

BTW running a Quake server on DSL = useless. Its good for playing with a few friends but that is about it.

Most high bandwidth users ie me ;) set there rate to 10K+ some use the default setting of 25K. You really think that with 10 people playing your DSl line can sustain 250K/sec?

I have experimented with high speed DSl and cable connections and I have personally found that it can't compare to a server setup on a college campus :D

RagingBITCH is right. A p2 ~400 Mhz or so can easily handle about 2 Quake 3 servers and a half life server. Total of about 50 players without hastle.

You just need to run linux with about 256 Megs of RAM :)

Definately AMD. And a MSI K7T Pro motherboard. Use the saved $$ to get some extra ram, or a faster HDD.

unless you have sdsl that is something like a 1mb up/down or thereabout's connection, you are probably going to be limited to very few people.

Finality, why do you think many servers limit your RATE? To keep greedy players like you from killing the server bandwidth. :p

What are you planning on limiting it to 4K/sec? So you can get 10 players?

What fun. You need a T1 or better to run a proper Q3 server. You will notice all clan games (tournament ones like tp.net) are never hosted on a cable or dsl connection. Too unstable and too slow. Good for playing with friends not for Quake.

Add to the fact that all clintT will be doing is sucking away bandwidth from himself.

It really depends on what spped DSL it is. If it is 384Kb/128Kb ADSL it won't be able to support many players. 1.5Mb/384Kb ADSL would be a bit better. If you have 1.1Mb or 1.5Mb SDSL you will be fine. 1.5Mb SDSL is virtually equivalent in bandwidth to a T1 however the latency will generally be lower on a T1. Although as far as latency goes ones ISP makes more of a difference than anything else generally.

Man, I'm getting sick of these AMD vs. Intel debates. Run what you are comfortable with dude. For people who have been running Intel since their first 8088 they will probably royally mess up the first time they set-up an AMD box and blame it on AMD. For people who are used to AMD they will mess up running Intel. The problems are multiplied exponentially when running Abit boards that give the luser way too many options that they have no idea how to configure.

It is the same thing as OS debates, run what ever you think you can set-up correctly.
