Quake Remastered

It's available on Steam for £7.99. I have the original Quake on CD, and I've played a good few OpenGL'ifyed ports of it too but one thing I really miss about the original is the fact that it looked more pixellated and detailed rather than "texture not high enough, let's blur this low-res texture", and QR looked a bit more pixel'y especially with the blood splatters so I gave it a try.

One thing that's a real shame is that it doesn't have the original Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, so I think I'll be getting my CD from the loft, ripping it and finding out if I can replace the in-game music with the CD, as the original version allowed any audio CD in the drive and it would just play whatever track number it thought was the right one for that level.

Ahha! "Steam/steamapps/common/Quake/rerelease/hipnotic/music" is a folder that contains nine ogg files, that'll be the one to mess with I think!

- edit - if someone else can confirm, I think it actually is the original reznor soundtrack.

Music licensing is such a mess. The one advantage of physical media. 👍

I still got the original Vice City radio rips on a USB, nice to listen to the unaltered versions.

Anyway I prefer the Quake 2 OST. Its up there as a GOAT metal album.

It's a long time since I heard it as I've had Q2 in a rar file for probably 20 years 🙂 That's one thing that turned me off playing it in recent years is that I think it needs the CD to play in-between level video bits; without them it's like: level 17 ended, now is level 18...

Oh wow, I have the original CD too! Mine was advertising first year free for online play, if I recall. It's in storage somewhere, and I may pick this up on Steam, if only for old time's sake.

I think I have this version. I got it for free from Prime Gaming through Epic. It looks way better than the GL versions did.

The original soundtrack is there as well. Comes with several expansion packs.

Is this the same version on GOG for $4? https://www.gog.com/en/game/quake_the_offering

I've been playing through Quake 4 on game pass an hour or so at a time, and I guess I'm not over boomer shooters as much as I thought. 😀
The trailer is the same so I assume so (even if the name is different).

Ever since Doom Eternal didn't grab me I've been doubting whether I still am into FPS's. I've completed Doom 2016 a couple of times, but I wasn't into that the same as I have been into older ones (I don't think the "an encounter is starting... this encounter is finished" format has quite the same kind of thrill as a berserker run one can do in Q1 for example), so I went back to what I regard to be my start being Quake 1, also playing 2016 whenever I get to a 'stop' moment in Q1.

Damn didn't realize the remaster didn't have the OG Reznor soundtrack.

Played through it a while ago and it was a blast, never had the chance back when it was originally released.

I'm starting to doubt myself now 🙂 The opening track for the menu is definitely familiar but the rest isn't. If it was an IP issue then surely none of Reznor's material would be in there?

Next time I'm in the loft I'll dig out the CD and rip it.

In one of the versions of Project Brutality, you can get the nailgun from Quake as an alternate chaingun pickup. It's pretty fun.

There is a fan made HD texture pack for Quake 4. It is huge but makes the game look a lot better.

EDIT: I should make it clear just how huge this texture pack is: 27 GB

I'm >75% through Q1 on hard (I thought I had it on nightmare until I remembered how to enable nightmare mode) in less than three hours, I guess I'm finding it a lot more engaging than say Doom 2016.

I wonder with D2016 / Eternal if they wanted to achieve unlocking players' berserker modes by force, whereas when I'm playing Quake 1 I'm going at my own pace which is sometimes "quiet" and careful and sometimes berserker style (I had fun for a while by setting off like half the enemies in The Elder God Shrine level and listening to the sounds of mayhem as they turn on each other as well as chasing me down 🙂 ). I think the forcing it element is why I play so much less D2016 and even less Eternal. I also found it strange with Eternal that falling does cost health then on level 2 you purposefully fall a pretty huge height with no damage... pick one, devs...

Going back and playing Q1 is making me feel less 'bad' about going back and playing old stuff instead of seeking out new stuff.

How can one speedrun Q1 in 11 minutes?!??:
