Quake II still has it going on

Nostalgia thread.

I busted out quake II, started a game on hard,
brought down the console and typed:
give railgun
give slugs 999

That game still has it going on. The intro movie was always a nice one.

It runs so fast on a modern video card too. I think I forgot just how fast you move in quake II.

I sure would dig a deathmatch.

wasn't quake2 supposed to be the last...and then quake3 was supposed to be the last ;p

Ah well, I guess quake4 is probably also the last 😉

I love all the Quakes but Quake2 was and is my favorite. Last January I spent a week or so playing the single player thru again.:beer:

Spent many many hours in several different mods playing deathmatch in Q2 over the years also.

Q2 never had it goin on, it was easily the worst in the series. It was Carmak's "lets see if we can figure out OpenGL" release.

<-- reaches for lynchin' rope, torch, pitchfork, mob assembly whistle.

Single player wasn't the best game ever, but the multiplayer gameplay, especially capture the flag and mods of it, was excellent for its time.

Quake 2 is indeed a solid game but the expansions are even better.

Quake II minigun == best FPS minigun evah.
The Venom from RTCW is by far the best.

It was Carmak's "lets see if we can figure out OpenGL" release.
At the time very few engines were better than Quake 2.

Quake1 baby. Because it was the fastest quake if not the fastest fps of all time. It had responsive physics that actually made it feel like you just hit someone with a rocket or got hit by a rocket. And it had a community that I've yet to see repeated since. A community that rewrote nearly every aspect of the game, from gameplay (ctf, tf, action quake, etc) to network (quakeworld) to engine (fuhquake, tenebrae). Your mod developers during the time of Quake1 are game developers today. Plus it had a NiN soundtrack. Infact, everything about Quake1 oozes perfection.

Yeah, Quake 1 had it going on too. No doubt about that. No other game was so likely to make you physically wince and say "ug" outloud when you got hit with that rocket. Gawd it hurt. It was definately faster, mostly because the scale was a little tighter I think.

As a very close 2nd, the railgun in quake 2 would make you feel it. When you get popped, you know it! In all likelyhood, your view is spinning backwards as your remaining giblets fly in other directions. I started with quake 1, but really got my skills honed playing quake 2, lithium mod online.

I love each in a different way, but quake 3 was probably the most refined of them. It picked up the graphics from quake 2 and ran away into 32bit land with them. It also got some of that quake 1 "feel" back to the movement physics.

I'm very much looking forward to the single player experience again with quake 4. It is supposed to be more of a "run and gun" experience like quake 2, but not the "pick your way carefully through the level" experience of doom 3. The graphics so far look awesome. It's also supposed to bring multiplayer back into the spotlight. Doom 3 pretty much left multiplayer out. FYI - you'll be able to carry a flashlight AND a gun for those of you worried.

One remark about the chaingun above. Yeah, it had the best chaingun ever. I don't care if you were carrying a rocket launcher or railgun, if a guy came into the room with that chaingun already run up to full speed, you were in fear. Everyone would run for cover until he ran out of ammo or let off the trigger long enough to let the gun spin down. It was a great balance of raw damage with that spinup time that kept the weapon both powerful and balanced. The sound fx and bullet-impact particle effects made it a great experience. I always thought the unreal minigun was so wimpy in comparison. I never had a fear of it, nor felt powerful when using it.

if you played LMCTF you know exactly what i'm talking about. quake 2 had the best online community EVER.

LM was pretty rockin.

Talk about an influential mod. Most of the really key features of any CTF game today even in UT2004 came from LM.

I know one of the guys who did a lot of the work on LM CTF - great stuff....

Q2 was a ton of fun......Q4 sounds pretty cool, hopefully they have it up and running at E3 in 2 weeks!

Yeah, and be sure to dl that bass-pack for Q2. That'll make those rocket explosions and chaingun rattles really annoy your downstairs neighbors!

Q2 has never left my harddrive since I first bought the game. I now have a CD with the game and patches and all mods, files, skins, packs, etc I need so that I can just copy the thing over whenever I reinstall/format, etc.

Dude, the Q4 Gladiator (railgun enemy from Q2) if f'n evil looking. He's huge and makes the tank commander from Q2 look like a little kid. I'm not sure if it's on all the time or not, but he sports an energy shield he holds up in the front.
