On another forum a poster seemed to say something to the effect that there are plans to produce a Quake 5. Is that true?

They are making a new Doom and I think Quake 4 sold at least a few copies, so probably. When this is going to happen? Only John Carmack knows.

While possible, it would be a console game ported to the PC with crappy textures, and lots of DLC.

Quake 4 was pretty enjoyable IMO. I think I've completed it more times than Doom 3. I don't think either were console ports, where did that comment come from?

Quake 5 would be absolutely fantastic if they really focused on what made Quake great. Realistic graphics and physics isn't fun, strafe jumping near the speed of sound is.

Do game developers and publishers like money? Do they lack the innovation to come up with new interesting IP's? Then yes, there will be a quake 5.

Yeah that basically happened a LONG time ago. Carmack was a god to FPS gamers, now they are pretty much a joke imo.

Yes, but I would have thought the reason for their good reputation was due to their 3D engines. Initially a 3D engine was revolutionary, after a while it isn't, it's evolution.

Reminds me I still haven't completed the Quake 4 campaign...I should pick it up on Steam.

I think ID software has lost direction in the last years....

Back before FPS were expected to be something more than a tech demo ID ruled, but that is stale to me now. I want something a bit more and most other developers of FPS are giving it. There will be more depth (lore, history, voice acting, whatever) in one hour of Bioshock Infinite than the entirety of any ID game.

Yes. Quake 3 Arena was blazing fast and is still a chaotic blast of fun at LAN parties.

Well I liked Rage... Aside from the awful, awful ending which might as well be the worst ending to any game ever, and that I feel played a big part in peoples disappointment, it was a damn solid game
Heck, I think its much better than all the CoD clones and crap, and the gameplay felt classic ID shooter style, it was really fun to play through

I have high expectations for Doom 4, especially when Id has said they want to go back to a more open world like the first two games, rather than the pitch black corridors that made up most of the 3rd
I dont think anyone can blame them really... People just dont seem to appreciate the good old shooter anymore without a million cutscenes and stealth gameplay and whatever

Look at Serious Sam 3, one of the few games that realizes its all about killing hordes of monsters... Got terrible reviews everywhere for no reason... Meanwhile every CoD gets a 9, lol what a joke this industry has become

I agree with Ben90. They need to get back to the high speed badassery that made this series stand alone in the competitive FPS market.

Apple-level marketing is the only thing that can save the twitch-genre at this point, IMO.

If the mass still gave a damn about strafe and rocket jumping, they'd be playing Quake Live. Or Warsow. Or Xonotic. (I could go on... )

Unfortunately, the price of free doesn't seem to be enough to entice this generation. Sigh.

Let us all cry - together.
