Quake 4 Savegames...

I recently reinstalled everything on my hard drive to clear some things out. At the time I was about halfway through Quake 4 so I copied over the savegame folder figuring I could load them after the reinstall.

When I copied the folder back into the program directory and tried to load from the files, Quake didn't even show any saved game files to be present. Is what I'm trying to do even possible, or do I have to replay from the beginning? The game is quite enjoyable but I can't say the thought of doing that gets me too excited.

1) Have you patched Q4 to the same version of the saved games? With many games, saved games will only work for the game version they were created.

2) Are you sure you put them back in the exact same folder?

I never updated the first time I installed it. I just started playing. Also, I just copied the folder so I'm fairly certain it's in the same place.

You could try manually loading the file through the console. Also try a quick-load.

How would I load it through the console? I can't seem to figure out what commands to use...

Bump for this answer. In the exact same boat as you my friend 😉. Fresh install, and I'm at a point where I'm 85% through as far AFAIK......... Why does this seem to work easy enough w/ some games and not others?

I tried loading through the console to no avail. It looks like it starts to load everything and then just quits. It says something about 'can't open log file' so I have to wonder if there was some other set of files that I should've copied over.

You prolly better specify the file and it's location (where you copied it from and where you tried to paste it).

I think the latest version of Q4 does not support old Q4 version demos/savegames due to a new protocol number. If you happened to install the latest Q4 patch only after your reinstall then that would explain it.

The file I'm trying to load is "Autosave_game_airdefense1.save" located in "C:\Program Files\id Software\Quake 4\savegames"

I haven't patched the game at all.

Try loadgame <game_name>

I was going to suggest you might be missing a file but you told us you copied over the whole folder:

Did you copy the entire folder across or not?
