Hope this isn't a repost, saw it in CPU and wanted to share:

A BETA update for QUAKE 4 is now available. This update is recommended for Windows users with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology (HT Technology) enabled processors, multiple processors, or systems with a dual core processor. The update is also required for Windows and Linux server admins as it addresses a recently identified problem with servers left unoccupied for very long periods of time (these servers will appear to be operating normally, but will crash clients that attempt to connect to them). This update will bring any previous version of the game (1.0.0 or 1.0.4) up to date and will not affect pure server, PunkBuster compatibility or protocol consistency.

id Software and Raven have worked with Intel to dramatically improve QUAKE 4 performance on systems with HT Technology, multiple processors, or dual core processors. Players who have a system with one of these configurations will notice performance gains in QUAKE 4 of anywhere from 25% - 87% depending on processor type. If you do not know whether or not you have a multi-processor, dual core, or HT Technology enabled system, please see the ReadMe file for simple instructions on checking your system. Please use the form at www.idsoftware.com/bugs/ to report any issues you find with the 1.0.5 update.

Finally, although we've released only small (but critical) updates to QUAKE 4 so far, we are working on a much broader update for release early next year, and we also have a couple of multiplayer map packs currently being tested for release in the near future. Stay tuned.

thats nice for people with those cpus. I have only played teh Quake 4 demo and thought it was OK only. Not worth buying (but hey, its just my opinion)

Now if they remade Enemy Territory with that engine, that might be enough to convince me to build a new computer

I've downloaded this patch but am hesitant to install it until I hear how it works out... I have a paid for copy of this game and run a HT cpu but I also run a no-cd patch because, quite frankly, it pisses me off to have to shuffle disks for games I already own. :p

I thought that the last patch removed the cd check?

Hrm from the patch description I take it they only optimized Intel HT/Dual core etc. What about us AMD dual core users :frown:

People in the other thread in CPU forum say it still works for AMD chips.

Prob just Intel advertising ;)

Are you sure its ME that has the comprehension problems?

"id Software and Raven have worked with Intel to dramatically improve QUAKE 4 performance on systems with HT Technology, multiple processors, or dual core processors."

In case you didnt know , Intel has dual core CPUs as well which is what the patch description is obviously reffering to..Genius.

instead of crying about it being an Intel only thing, how about reading the whole thing? It says they worked with Intel, but it did not specify that it only works on Intel processors - you know, the part that says "or systems with a dual core processor".

It does work with AMD dual-cores.

It's foolish to assume that this will only boost Intel dual core, taking several factors into consideration:

1. Intel dual core can't hold a candle to AMD in terms of performance.

2. The vast majority of dual core owners are AMD customers.

3. The vast majority of gaming rigs use AMD processors at this time.

my reading into this is that there will be a boost for HT enabled processors(Intel ONLY) as well as ALL dual core.

I will test this out in a couple days on my Opty 170, we'll see if there's a tangible difference.

Anyone know how to benchmark Q4? :)

They say HT because it can process multiple threads emulating dual processors. Dual core covers both Intel and AMD.

Good to see idsoftware whoring themselves out to the higest bidder, as always ;) . Not a single mention of AMD whatsoever in there, even though the X2/Opterons could (potentially) have the largest gains.

I went ahead and installed this patch(I have a Northwood P4 with HT) and the results are quite good after playing for a couple hours. I can easily recommend this to whoever might benefit from it... it sure made a nice difference for me.
