"ATI takes drastic lead when it comes to 1600x1200 with this features off where it runs almost 10 frames faster than Nvidia's offering. The trick is Nvidia said to use back at GTX launch that we should be testing those cards with FSAA 4X and 8X at higher resolutions as this is the way that gamers that buys them are going to play, should we say this is their way to meant to be played."

"ATI driver team did a greet job, we will keep our eyes opened for some kind of cheating and non allowed optimizations but so far we can tell that driver is fine, cheating free, picture quality is good. Surprise, surprise Radeon X1800XT becomes the world fastest Quake 4 Open GL card and not even the most optimistic ATI lovers could expect such a turn."

Quake 4 Ultra High Quality FSAA 4X + Aniso 8X

Is that supposed to be your disclaimer so you don't get flamed? lol

Anyway, if you have both, I don't see what the problem is.

So both can play Q4 with excellent framrates @ 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF. And it's all about enjoying the game, not the framerates........right? :p

what "no more"? :p
:Q

as long as i remember - Video has been a dumping ground from GH [like P&N is to OT]
Just say what you're gonna say and ignore the flames ;)
[being prepared somewhat to backup what you say]

and anyway, it looks like ATI has improved it's ogl performance - finally

That's what Nv supporters say when they're losing the fps contest. (not necessarily referring to you)

Is it definitely improvement in OGL, or mostly leveraging the extra ram? TIA and it has been awhile :)

As has been mentioned before, do not confuse this with a complete rewrite of ATi's OGL drivers.

This was only a quick fix so they could use their new ringbus.

A quick way to test this would be trying the 'new' drivers on an X800 card and see if you get a big jump in performance.

it's a slight improvement and largely a "quick fix" . . . but it's better than it was.
[i believe all the Radeons benefit somewhat by the next driver release . . . the x1800s more so]

This is kind of old news, but it's interesting to note that apparently neither card renders shadows in Q4 demos. That could affect framerates. Hopefully we'll see more thorough testing with the 512MB GTX vs. 512MB XT reviews.

X1800XT evaluation posted today at (H) Here.

It seems to show that only in timedemo's does the XT exceed the GTX performance. Kyle and Brent did some "Real World" benches. They tell quite a different story in Quake4.

OK so this is for Q4/Doom3, but does it affect all OpenGL titles in such a drastic fashion (eg Riddick), or are the gains primarily in Doom3 engine games?

The improvement by ATI is very good, but it's by no means "lights out." 91fps vs 76fps on the X1800XT vs 7800GTX @16X12 w/ AA, AF is a 16.5% advantage - nice but not exactly earth shattering at either end of the spectrum.

It does pretty much put the X1800XT at #1 in almost everything vs the 7800GTX at high res with AA/AF... However, ATI's lead will probably be short lived with the 512MB GTX coming out soon.

An impressive gain for ATI no doubt (maybe that memory controller is worth all those extra transistors after all!). Is this going to be in the 5.11 drivers?

A: Is this quake 4 specific or doom 3 engine specific?
B: Is this x1800 specific or ati general?

It's X1800 specific since it's an optimization in the new memory controller.

Also, the fix does work wonders for Doom3 also (I've seen in other threads). I'm not sure if it has the same benefit in all OpenGL titles though (eg Riddick), and I've asked for results in other OGL titles too...

Q4 for Xbox360.
ATI card on XBox 360

Note the relation.

AKA: more sponsorship/bribery optimizing BS.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not an ATI hater. We know which company "sponsorship/bribery optimize" most.

Just hate the tactic.

Probably because they weren't running 4xAA.

Now wait....Hard OCP ran Q4 @ 1600x1200, High Quality, with 2X AA and 4X AF, which are lower settings than those referenced in the INQ article. Yet the average framerates for both ATI and NV at those settings are about 64 FPS.

Are you implying that bumping that to 4X AA and 8X AF (as in the INQ article) would get the ATI card close to 90 and the NV card close to 75? I must be misunderstanding what you are trying to say.

It seems more likely to me that either the time demo or FRAPS is not a good way to judge performance. Since the FRAPS numbers seem to come from a relatively unbiased website (or, I should say that I've seen HOCP accused of being both ATI biased and NV biased, which probably means they are relatively unbiased and just get labeled that way by whoever's favorite card was losing comparisons), and since they take into account AI and sound and such, I would think they are more realistic and the time demo numbers from the INQ are less "true".

-D'oh!
