Quake 3 very dark with geForce2 MX400

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

I just bought a new VisionTek geForce2 MX400 Video Card today. I installed Quake 3 and set it to Default OpenGL settings.

The graphics looked great, but they were very very dark. I could barely see anything.

I then set it back to Software Decoding and it was much brighter, but the graphics were definately not as good.. No comparison.

Does anyone know if this is possible to fix or am I going to be returning this card?

Thanks,

Josh

IT's been awhile since I played Q3 but as I recall you can adjust the lighting from within the video settings in Q3. just move the bar and it'll get brighter(if I recall correctly)

That's exactly what I did, but even at it's brightest it is still VERY dark.

Thanks Though,

I don't think that is really the problem. The program worked fine, albeit not as good graphics under my old graphics card. Not the monitor.

Thanks Though,

Hey... is your desktop also dark?* Or is it just Quake 3?
*If that is the case, goto advanced options on desktop settings, and change the gamma

I found that OpenGL games do run darker, try to go with Direct 3D...

Well, that is a problem with NVidia settings, all of the Quake series games will appear very dark. 3dfx drivers are able to make Quake look nice and bright. I don't know how to help you but I had a similar experience with my TNT three years ago, I got angry and I trashed Nvidia card and bought voodoo 3 instead.
The answer lies in default open gl settings.....
stay with 3dfx...

P.S. "unpluGGedddd" - Quake series supports ONLY open gl, there is no direct 3d or glide API...

There must be something wrong with your montor setup if the game is still dark at maximum brightness. You should increase your monitor's brightness.

two things can help.
1) Program called 3Deep
2) play with settings in autoexec.cfg called
set gl_modulate ? (try 2.5)
set gl_intensity ? (try 3)

This will definately help get those shadows brighter

Many new digital monitors vary brighness based on res so often chaing the brighness of your monitor while in a game wont affect your desktop. I have noticed that some combinations of gfx card and monitors can result in dark colours, though thats fixiable using monitor brighness settings.

I can't think why you would be having problems as Quake 3 runs fine on my MX (WinXP, and D4s)
