Quake 2 problems, need help!!

I am playing Q2 ground zero mission pack & the game plays fine, but about every 3 days or so when I try to restore a saved game it goes straight into console mode & says "Error - Read level:function pointers have moved" and then just sits in console mode. Hours of playing the game wasted!! Does anyone know what is causing this?

What version of the expansion pack do you have (it's in the readme file)?
I believe there are patches available for the mission packs themselves.
