Quake 1 single player.... Is there a point?

I've run through the first episode and a half now, and there's not one hint of a story line... is there something I'm missing? Definitely no half-life...

Also, this game is such a throwback. With the latest GLQuake it looks liek a fairly modern game, but the gameplay is so amazingly doom-like... keys, door that close behind you when you go into a room with monsters, episodes.....

I've never played through Q1 single player before.

No, there is no point at all. Just shoot everything and everyone. Don't forget this is 1995 game, really old. In those time, no one thought of a story for a FPS 😉

Ever wonder why Half-Life was heralded for having a great plot and single player gameplay? Because it was the first to do so 😛

The point is to try to beat the game as fast as you possible can... search for Quake done Quick 😀 its an amazing demo of a complete run through of Quake in about 15 minutes

It's just raw carnage at its best...you don't need anything else.

Quake deathmatch on DM2, DM4, and DM6 is still the best multiplayer in existance. Nothing will ever top the genius of those 3 levels.

Actually, I'm partial to Tokay's Towers on Quake 2. With anything more than 4 players, I found that immensely entertaining.

No question, this game is totally plot-free - in many respects it was a throwback even in its time. Even its predecessors (Wolfenstein, Doom) and its contemporary, Duke Nukem 3D, had more coherent stories, and obviously games like Half-Life, NOLF and MOHAA have raised the bar in terms of storyline.

Something wrong with this picture:

Someone mentioned quake1 and plot.
Someone mentioned quake1 and GL.

First off notfred, you can only truly enjoy quake1 in 320x240 software mode. Then you must understand that Quake1 single player is not about plot, but about skill. You play it at the hardest skill you can (nightmare) and try to make it through alive. The people that made Quake Done Quick, Quake Done Quicker, and Painkeep Done Quick took skill to a new level.

Yes, the point is to kill sh!t! I've been meaning to install it again and play through. I love playing with a grappling hook!

hell, we still play it here on the LAN every once in a while. I've made about 4 or 5 levels for quake too 🙂

I dunno I always liked the simplicity of the concept.. just shoot everything that moves 😀

I'm not sure I get the point of playing it in software mode - is that to make it more difficult or something? I know in the old days Thresh always played low-res software mode in competition, so that in the pre-3D-acceleration days things would run as quickly and fluidly as possible - this seems to fly in the face of doing it for the sake of maximizing the difficulty of the game. Since it will run at triple-digit framerates even at the highest settings in OpenGL with today's computers, I don't see any reason not to play GLQuake.

Of course there is no point. Single player on Quake I and II are nearly unfinishable because monotony sets in and threatens to suck your very soul away. Idsoftware never was any good with storylines.

Don_Vito: 320x240 software was what the game was intended for. Any other res just feels slightly different. To get the true feeling of the game you need to play in 320x240 software 😀

<< I want links to those quick quake video's.... >>

Quake Done Quick
I recommend Quake done 100% quick, completed on Nightmare with full kills and secrets, although there were better grenade jumps on the original one.

This thread is making me nostalgic, I think i'm going to run off and frag some shamblers now. 🙂

I will have to defer to your wisdom on this point, since I have not played it at that res since I was hobbling along on my 486/66! Honestly I did not play Quake all the way through until I was on a PII-233 with a RIVA 128, and playing GLQuake.

The point is to make your weapon fire something out of it's barrel. The sub-point is to hit something and make it go "splat!" 😀
