quadrupole magnet

When they say that a quadrupole magnet can focus or defocus an electron beam, what the heck are they talking about?

I would imagine that they mean it can focus an electron beam or diffuse it.

Four poles = two pairs of pos/neg ?

perahps it can create a magnetic field in a ring of some sort that can direct the flow of electrons that pass thorugh it or scatter them by increasing the strength of the pos. vs. neg. ?

Quadrupole will focus in one transverse plane, but defocus in the other transverse plane; if alternate, can have net focusing in both planes.
