When they say that a quadrupole magnet can focus or defocus an electron beam, what the heck are they talking about?

I would imagine that they mean it can focus an electron beam or diffuse it.

Translate, please.Quadrupole will focus in one transverse plane, but defocus in the other transverse plane; if alternate, can have net focusing in both planes.
