When they say that a quadrupole magnet can focus or defocus an electron beam, what the heck are they talking about?

Four poles = two pairs of pos/neg ?

perahps it can create a magnetic field in a ring of some sort that can direct the flow of electrons that pass thorugh it or scatter them by increasing the strength of the pos. vs. neg. ?
