Quadro 4600

I just put a couple in workstations again, and really, why go back to what is basically the 5900U/6800U heatsink with an external exhaust? I guess it gets all the heat right out...

Oh yeah, I got to play with a Quadro 4600 today 😛

If its the heatsink that is on the 8800series cards (which I think it is) it's due to the fact that the new heatsink being awesome and quiet... 🙂

Although the 7900GTX cooler was great, it also exhausted hot air into the case.

Dont think you want to do that when G80s dump alot of heat.

You mean the GTX/GTO cooler draws air into the case and blows it towards the bottom (in a traditional ATX tower case)?

I'd always thought it was blowing hot air out of the case through the expansion slot grill.

It drew in the air from the center, and the hot air would be pushed both out of the case in one end and into the case on the other end.

blckgrffn,

I am wondering if you could run spec viewpref 9.03 on this quadrofx 4600 system? I am really wondering if the unified shaders make a difference because in theory cad applications need vertex units and geometry shaders and not much of pixel shading so i would think due to the fact it can give more power to the vertex engine it should be A LOT faster.

Sorry to be a little off topic as i am really wondering about this and i have yet to see a review online.

Also on topic, i think the new G80 fans would be better as the heat is going outside the case. But did you hear a difference, what the G70 quadro fan more quiet then the G80 quadro fan?

Yeah, I get the whole exhaust all the air out thing, but you just knew the 7900GTX cooler was going to be quiet.

We'll be running specviewperf under RHEL4, is that useful?

Well, our linux gurus are handling the machines now, and the 4500 scored 20 FPS in maya vs 88 on the 4600. I'll post more as I learn more.
