Quad to Dual Performance effects?

So I pulled my Q9300 out of my system today and put in a brand new E5200 which I got really cheap. When I went to play games, I now get this lag sensation. I call it a sensation cause it makes me want to punch walls. In any case, what happens is, I go into a game i.e. L4D or CS:S and I get these 3-8 second lag spikes where if I was shooting, it pauses( i still here the gun shooting 80000 times) and then cuts back in. It does this like every minute or two.

So I thought, maybe the chip is bad, so I tried my roommates E4500(my old chip). It did the same thing.

Could my system be used to four cores or something? I have no clue what the problem would be. I know nothing is overheating. And everything worked flawlessly with the 9300. It is also not the internet cause my roommate hasn't had even a blip during gaming.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

WTF would you do that?

Was your q9300 overclocked or stock? Is the e5200 overclocked? How fast on both? Is the HSF mounted correctly?

L4D & CS:S are not very quad-optimized so a fast dual should be plenty fast enough.

I am trading the 9300 so I am using the 5200 till I get what I traded for. My 9300 was OC'ed to 3ghz and the 5200 is OC'ed to 3.4ghz. But the games were doing that before I even OC'ed the 5200. When I changed chips I reset the BIOS and started from scratch.

Google L4D sound looping. It's not necessarily a common issue, but it's not rare either - what you're experiencing may be related to that. There are some things you can try to alleviate the problem, but no hard fixes at this point. It's not a question of hardware I don't think.

The trade = you got the shitty end of the deal

I didn't trade for the 5200, it is just the chip I am using till I get the chip I traded for. And my BIOS are the latest version 18, I can't see them coming out with a later version since Abit closed.

And as far as the sound loop....why would it just start now? The game has been running flawlessly for months.

Maybe the chip isn't stable at 3.4g with the volts you are using. Have you ran stability tests?

So are you getting a different quad in exchange for your Q9300 or what?

If the games ran fine on Q9300 @ 3GHz and stutters on E5200 @ 3.4GHz I would guess maybe you have some stuff running in the background eating some CPU cycles or something? Because those games do not require a quad to run smoothly - an E5200 @ 3.4GHz should run them smooth as butter on hot toast.

Mmmmm, toast... :p

is it the lack of cache memory?
I don't really game at all, but that is the only thing other than the extra cores I can see that would cause the problem.

Turn off multi-core in L4D options.

I will try this when I get home. The other problem I have is that my FPS is locked at 60 kinda like in CS when you have vertical sync enabled. However, I don't have it enabled, and it doesn't do that in any other game.
