You have a quad core as a NAS... is that completely necessary? I was going to turn my sempron into my NAS once i get my quad up and running.

And yeah, it is too much power. I have been using my dual core for the last two, three weeks and i have noticed that it spends 95% of the time in C n' Q mode running at 1.2v and 1.39GHz. If i can get by on a Opty165 running at 1.39 GHz. I think a Q6600 is just going to overkill for me. But at these prices, why the hell not? Plus the MB on the Opty is dieing so i have to replace it soon anyway. 😛

that NAS's primary function is a cruncher in my crunching army on WCG. 😛

So she never gets a break. The only quadcore i have that is taking a nice snooze from WCG is the one my friend is using. She complained her room got way too hot when she came home. 😛

Believe it or not the Tjunction on that chip is 100C, your CPU wasn't throttling at 85C. And yes, Intel has a retail box for the quad, in fact I don't believe you can't even buy an OEM Q6600 right now.
 
Testing at 3.4Ghz today. Hope to have some Prime95 screens for you tonight if all goes well. I'm probably overvolted b/c I was testing at 3.6Ghz trying to get it to go. I was hitting 71C on 2 cores, and 67C on the other two, but even with 1.37-1.38v real I was only able to get about 20 minutes out of Prime95 on the 4th core. The other cores didn't seem to care at all, and I left them running overnight to be sure.

So I will have to check to be sure, but I believe when I left it was about 60C loaded on 2 cores, and 57C on 2 cores, with 1.32v real. It's at FSB380 and 3.43Ghz.

It sounds like the 85 he is talking about is the CPU temp reported in the BIOS, which is
essentially the IHS temp... Core temps run about 20 hotter . So, it does sound like
thermal shut down took place..

At stock, the Intel HSF, installed properly, will do the job .. The highest clocked Quad that
comes with HSF is QX6700 / 2.66g ...

I had a Zalman 9500 on my Q@3.2 for a while and the IHS temp hovered in the high
50's .. Cores - low 80's ..

The Ultra 120 ( lapped ) brought it down to high 30's IHS , low 70's cores ...

which is what ive been telling everyone from the start. Only look at 2 sinks for these monsters. Tuniq Tower, or TR120. IFX-14 looks promising as well.
 
aigo, are you sure your G0 is 4ghz orthos/crunch stable with 1.48v? just seems a bit low on the voltage. I noticed you wrote 1.5v at 4050 mhz, but I dont see reference to 1.48v at 4ghz. I do see a 1.48v at 3.6ghz on your B3. maybe the OP got mixed up?

if not, please dont be offended but I would definetely like to see some idle and load screenshots with core temp/everest/whatever you use, just for my own information cause it will help me when I start overclocking my G0. also give me details on the cooling you are using to achieve that overclock.

You may be right, but he obviously can't access the BIOS from within Windows so it would be nice to know what program he was using in Windows to get the temperature. If it was something that isn't calibrated to that Tjunction, then 85C would really be 100C and it would indeed be throttling.

Oh, and the QX6850 comes with a Intel HSF, and that's at 3ghz. However I haven't seen what specific HSF it comes with, it may not be the normal one.

no the op messed up once again. LOL.

i gave up after this third time.

The voltage according to my ASUS ProbeII vCore reads 1.51V

On bios its set at 1.55V. 😛

idle temps was seen at 33C across all 4 cores. Load temps in the mid 60's during the day, and lower 60's - upper 50's at night.

And b4 anyone reading this gets smart and tries to mimic my voltage settings:

This is whats required to overclock ANY Quadcore @ 1.5+Vcore I dont care if you have a G0 or a B3.

Actually a MCR320, if you cant afford a PA120.3 and a D5 or a DDC-3.2 on a ApogeeGTX waterblock.

NO GFX added in the same loop. the GFX loop is in blue, the Board/CPU loop in red.
 
3.5ghz 1.525v in bios but goes down to 1.40-1.41v under load, 1.46v idle

prime small fft stable for 1.5 hours so far.

load temps are 63/61 - idle temps are 38/37

 

on my siggy ive been solid for a year with bios 1.51 1.470 actual.
I see no reason to push beyond 1.4; regardless of quad core; just do a lap.

I'm very tempted for quad; what's the best price for one currently?

Prime 95 failed after 6hrs on the 4th core at 3.5Ghz with 1.352v real. 2 cores at 68 and 2 at 62 - I don't think temps are holding me back, so I will give 3.5Ghz another shot today with a slight voltage increase. I believe I have 1.4 set in BIOS right now, which shows as 1.38 idle, and drops to 1.3520 load.

crap your vdroop is off then. Your going to need to up the voltage. You need at least 1.4Vcore REAL to hold 3.5ghz on a G0 from my tinkering. Look at your asus probeII for Vcore. Its usually on sync with Vcore real in bios.

There not that great until you try to push higher for the 400fsb. Otherwise they perform nearly on par with the B3's.

norborne where did you get that prime95 work thread program? ive been looking for it. Im tired of loading prime95 4 times. :\

I am nearing 7hrs Prime95 at 3.5Ghz and 1.368v. We'll see what happens, but I am fairly certain that it will be enough for 3.5 stable.

I pushed up to almost 1.4 real when I was trying to get 3.6Ghz to fly, but that 4th core kept dropping in the first hour. Strangely enough, or not so strange perhaps, is that the other 3 cores were perfectly fine at 3.6 and I let them go for about 4 hours.

I don't think I ever did actually hit 1.4 real though, but I was breaking 75C temps, which I am not comfortable with for 24/7 OC. I want under 70C in full load Prime95, and that should be closer to 60C during normal gaming/encoding/etc, which is acceptable to me.

I was really hoping to break a 1000Mhz OC, and so I am pretty stoked about this chip so far.

I may move to water eventually depending on how noise and temps pan out in this new case, but I would only do that if I was hungry for 3.8 or trying to push 4Ghz.

@Noubourne Thanks, ive been looking for that program for a while. But i havent done a lot of stability testing outside of WCG.

The 4ghz isnt prime stable. I havent had the chance to throw her on prime95 on 4 cores. However she produces around 25k points on WCG PER DAY. No errors, and its been doing that for 2 weeks.

She's not up and running yet, as i have mentioned i borked my loop up by replacing the CPU so many times. Havent had time to redue it. Work tieing me down. :\
 
you need to quit that stupid job then and get a job that allows you to oc 24/7!!! hmmm, maybe I should, too. I'm 34 now, I have $828 in the bank...I think I can retire soon!

i swithched to an ultra 120 extreme and am 3.5ghz stable (few hours prime small fft so far) but been runnin it for a couple days so far no probs. 1.5v in bios but 1.46 real idle and 1.41 load real.

Its been running at this speed for 4 days now without a hitch. Prime95 on all 4 cores ran for 9.5 hours. orthos x2 ran for 4 hours. stable test in occt

I have had it booted and running windows fine and primed for 20 mins @3.7Ghz (410x9) but it wouldnt complete OCCT. it would get to about 99.5% complete and then reboot the computer. Im not sure if thats a temp threshhold or not. still working on it.
I also was able to prime at 3.6 (400x9), but i didnt run it long enough as i wanted to try 3.7

these G0 chips are doing great. very pleased with my quad.
Sure i might have been able to get an e6850 to 3.8ghz, but a quad @ 3.6ghz (or even 3.45) > 3.8Ghz dual imho.
 
I'm late getting to this thread.

First some comments: The thread is most valuable to provide a profile for over-clocking core-2-Quads. If it's just a P***ing contest to see who's got the highest clock speed, well, that's fine, too. How I'm going to participate in early CPU conflagrations and burnouts, though, is best put this way, using a quote from movie shown in a high-school "safe-driving" course: "Turn Right To Win. . . . " [Mario Andretti]

Philosophy: I don't need the highest attainable clock speed at the cost of a dead CPU or mobo six months or a year from now. So I limit my over-clocks to manufacturer guidelines. For the B3 stepping, the retail box says "1.35V Maximum." A C2D Temperature Guide published at Tom's Hardware suggests that VCORE exceeding this limit by 10% can be stable and provide some "longevity," and can fit within Intel's thermal guidelines.

So I trim my VCORE settings -- and therefore my over-clocks -- to temperatures. I want my system to run cooler than simply what INtel says is "safe" versus "warm" versus "hot."

I'm using air-cooling, with some low-tech enhancements. The enhancements buy me about 10C degrees in lower Core-Temp values. If I need to post the temperature bar-graphs of 8-second sampled observations over three, six, eight or 12 hours of double-ORTHOS runs, I can do it, but for now -- you get the peak value in the range for each core, and either a strictly controlled Room Ambient in degrees-F, or a carefully observed and defined range for the ORTHOS runs.

Here's two easy over-clocks, limited to a 1:1 QDR-to-DDR2 ratio, with lowest or near-lowest latency settings. You will see from the temperatures that there is "headroom" for higher speeds, given the VCORE settings used and the CoreTemp peak values. Even so, these over-clocks were "objectives" which I set for myself, so I'm OK with them for now.
