Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone had any idea which would perform better (under Linux) in a server environment....

Quad Opteron 844's... or Dual Opteron 265's (or 275 or 285 even) Dual Core...

The reason being we found a system used that contains Quad Opteron 244's, 16 GB of RAM, and 540 GB of hot-swap disk space all in a 4u case. It amounts to $2500 (pick-up). In great condition, etc.

However, we can get a Dual Opteron 265 setup with 4 GB of ram and 250 GB of space for around the same price. Just wondering what you guys would do, and the Quad Opteron would really be that much faster. I've heard that the dual opteron 265's would outperform the quad 844's.

i don 't know your load types. if there a a chance that you'll be maxing out the ram and going for the swap disk then i'd say get the 16 gb ram one. other wise dual cores would be faster imo

Opteron 844 = 1.8Ghz Single Core
Opteron 265 = 1.8Ghz Dual Core

In theory, they should perform about the same. Obviously the Dual's will be better, due to the fact it will use less space than the Quad, unless you need the expansion slots.

Even better, if you can wait, will be the Xeon (or even the desktop Xtreme) Quad-Core Kentsfield. A single 2.66 Kentsfield willl probably outperform them all.

it should come out Q4 2007.So in november or december.
Woodcrests are out now.But if u want to run them u'll have to get FBDIMMS.(very power hungry, low frequencies, and high latencies but is supposed to be the most stable ram out there and did i mention its pricey)
If that aint a problem,by all means get it.otherwise get the dual opty 265 build or get kentsfield when it comes out.
