Quad Core question

Hey i dont mean to jump the gun but im trying to figure out if a quad core (Intel when they come out) will be worth it? Will i be able to surf the web, download large files and encode video all at the same time without any noticable difference(speed) with a quad core or is this just to much to ask a quad core to do because of ths fsb or whatever may slow the system down. With my x2-3800 if im downloading files wile also surfing the internet the is a slow down

Downloading files from the internet + Surfing the net = Network slowdown, not a computer one. Should you upgrade to a full T1 line or higher, I'm sure you'll notice no slowdowns.

A dual core could do what you propose and more just fine.

Quad cores, well, that would be able to do a hell of a lot more simultaneous tasks on top of that.

The FSB doesnt seem to be that much of an issue with Conroes, i'm not sure whether it will hinder quad core Kentsfield processors that much.

EDIT: Are you trying to say that your computer is running slow because you are downloading and browsing the internet 😕 ?

No im not saying it slow in general because of that. For instance if im dragging files from my internal hard drive to my external drive lets say it takes 1 minute. If while im doing that i log onto the internet the 1 minute goes to 7 minutes if i get off the internet it will go back to 1 minute

x2-3800
1 gig of ram
asus a8n5x mobo

I'll assume your external HDD is plugged in via a USB port, yes? If so is your modem plugged in via the USB port too?

If so then you are saturating the USB bus/controller big time, and this is what is causing the slow downs!

Always use an Ethernet port on the mobo or an NIC add in card for Internet access 😉

Check task manager and see if both the cores get fully loaded when performing the said tasks. This will prove the load being put on the processor.

In a normal case scenario, those tasks will not effect the processor at all. Your bottle necks would be the disk I/O (obviously making sure you?re using DMA of course) and internet connection speed.
