Quad-Core Nehalem Chips

I was about to buy a new cpu and figured they would go down in price when the Quad-Core Nehalem Chips come out. Does anyone know when they will be announced?

Its suppose to be "announced" end of October. But actual availability could be over a month or more after. On the good news front though, they are suppose to start out at prices you see now for chips, so lot cheaper than with current core2duos and core2quads when they came out.
 
I wouldn't expect any drastic price drops, and certainly not right away. Even after the E8400 came ought a lot of people were paying $250 or more for the E6850 because they just didn't know any better.

Most people are not as well informed in their purchasing decisions as those who read AT daily. That lets places like Newegg charge higher prices on old CPUs than you might expect.

Heck, Newegg's price on the E6750 is still $185, about the same price as the E8500:

Depends on what you're doing.

It really would help to know all the specs of your current system and what you intend to be using it for. It's possible that what would help most is a RAM or video card upgrade.

I'm not trying to claim that I know better than you which part of your system needs upgrading. I'm just saying that until we know more, any recommendation that I or anyone else gives would be a stab in the dark.

The E8400 is at a good price point, but if what you're doing is heavily multi-threaded you'd probably be a little better off with a Q6600. If you've got an E6600 right now, it's possible that what you'd really want to do is upgrade your 7600GS to an HD4850. Know what I mean?
