Quad core in Q1 2006?

I anticipated the new fab to be 65nm not 90nm like others expected.

How does this effect the quad core chips that were supposed to be out first quarter?

Will they still be arriving 1st quarter? I have my doubts now.

A while back both Intel and AMD I believe were predicting Quad core on a chip 1st quarter 2006.

I will try to google the info.

The opteron is designed for multi core so wouldnt it be "Shock and Awe" if AMD delivered Quad Core in early 2006. Even if its 90nm?

Paul Ortellini at Intel I think would have a stroke if AMD did that.

A 400+ mm^2 core would cause the same problem to AMD engineers.

Quad core is slated for Q4 06 at the earliest. Realistically I think we're talking Q1 07 or later.

So it wouldnt fit and you would need 65nm?

IBM has already dont this with that power chip. Couldnt they just manufacture the beast and let mobo makers come up with motherboards and cooling?

I bet AMD would get some instant recognition on the stock market if they did it.

It's doable but you would get terrible yields.

They can do it because they make money on the entire system, software and support. Even a typical two way system goes for tens of thousands of dollars, while the big 64 way systems are in the millions or tens of millions.

I bet AMD would get some instant recognition on the stock market if they did it.
Which doesn't directly affect AMD's bottom line.

Edit: Also the Power5+ is only about 250mm^2 in size.

Yea but it would be really cool. The could sell them to Rap stars to hang around their necks for thousands each. Major FPU Bling!

Bummer but I look forward to 2007 then and I guess 45nm is in 2008 and according to Intel 45nm doesnt have the current leakage problems so major speed increases will occur supposedly.

Imaging that Quad CPU on a 45nm with Major Speed Increase then building a dual chip system. Effectively 8 CPU's in a box. All possible in 2008.

In the words of Cartman "Sweet!" Thanks All.

LIke the dual cores, quad cores will arrive in the opterons first....90nm will be out of the gate for the Fab 36 and that is more to take care of the overwheling demand for current A64, Sempron and X2 chips (leaders of the pack by the way)...65nm will be nescessary for quad cores and expect to start hearing about them in Q2-Q3 with some possible sample reviews and then likely a launch in the Q4 2006...Quad cores desktop models by Q1 2007...

This is not a surprise considering slot M2 has been told to us for sometime it was 90nm and that isn't even to arrive until Q1 2006....we are getting way to ahead of ourselves...

basically AMD has the ability to ramp up launces like it did when Intel tried to pull a fast opne with its inferior dual core offering..AMD is in more reactioary mode of late...

That's a geek for ya. :D

I'm not all that excited about M2 personally (although DDR2 is the future and AMD must adopt it) but the very thought of a quad-core A64 really gets me drooling :D

M2 only makes me excited because:

1) My next system will be M2 for upgradability reasons

or

2) It will push s939 prices down so my next system will be s939.

I dont think AMD can push that fast towards 65nm and even though thats a step in the right direction, they have a little extra time due to their A64 + X2 success to make sure they can put together a processor that beats the competition.

AMD will probably go quad core first but Im not expecting anything special until 2007.

CPU technology seems to take a while to develop, mature and come into the market. Cant expect miracles although some would already argue that AMD have performed a miracle by beating Intel in performance a few times when you consider their budgets and market power.

AMD doesn't have to be proactive anymore, they're in the lead. So they bust their asses and their bugdets for an extra 3-4% performance over what they have now. AT'ers would be pleased, but the average person couldn't tell the difference. Maybe teh lead would get them some mindshare, but probably not marketshare. I mean, Intel's crap that is coming out now can't compete with technology designed 3 years ago!
