Quad core Atom?

Here it is Christmas, and it's time for me to be thinking about getting a new laptop. My old one is an HP Stream 11. After living with it, I have come to the conclusion that I need a laptop with a 4-core Atom and a 13-inch screen. I could use a machine with 4+ GB RAM. So far, the 64GB SSD that came with the laptop is OK -- I put my content on an SD card.

Now is the time to get a new laptop because the Atom is now using a 14nm process. Who makes a Stream replacement? Does Intel make a 4-core Goldmont?

If you can wait, many new Apollo Lake subnotebooks should be announced at CES. Celeron N3450 and Pentium N4200 are quad-cores.

If you're looking for 11-14'' <$300 options I think it's worth it. Apollo Lake is a significant step up from Braswell.

Alternatively, $350 buys you i3-7100 (Kaby Lake-U) notebooks from Acer and HP - but those are 15.6'' and >2 kg, so larger/heavier than your current Stream.

Then you understand that I am looking for a flyweight, not a desktop substitute. Something that you can carry around and hardly notice. I tend to use these things once a year, so I don't need fancy. If I had gotten a 13" Stream, I probably wouldn't bother getting a replacement. But as you say, the Apollo Lake is much advanced over what I have.

Pricing is really cramped at the lower tiers. Just a few more dollars, and you get a whole lot better.

I got an Inspiron 13-7358 13.3" (or something, I forgot exact SKU) with an i7-6500U (Skylake)/256GB SSD/8GB for $450 at the Dell Outlet with 35% off coupon. Could've gotten a cheaper version of it with i5-6200U/500GB spinning disk for $350 or so.

I think Apollo Lake would have to be <$250 to be worth it over some cheap clearance Skylake laptops.
