Quad Core 6600 - Need quiter heatsink - No Overclocking

Hi,

Recently I got the Quad Core 6600 for my desktop and it is great except it is way too loud especially the stock heatsink.

I do not wish to overclock just need something much quiter and can keep the CPU at reg temperature.

Any suggestions would be great. I looked around newegg but most were way too BIG and I'm running a Midtower case I do not need a skyscraper heatsink ;)

Thanks a bunch!

Any "small" HSF will be loud (small fan moving fast). You could try the Zalman CNPS9700 or something. Or Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.

Thank you, that I understand. I'm fine with paying a bit more for expensive compact heatsink or a midsized heatsink. Some of the heatsinks are just too big and I do not wish to stuff it in the case.
Anyhow what would be quitest heatsinks for the quad core as my choices?

Thanks!

You can also use a zalman fan mate II rpm adjuster, about $7 at Fry's and available for slightly more on some specialty websites. I usually adjust my heatsink fan to under 3500 rpm. It's easier on your ears, and rarely raises the temp more than 2 degrees celcius.

But this is a quad. The reason the stock fan is loud is because it's got to run full blast to keep it cool. A new HSF like the CNPS 9500/9700 would work fine and even at full on, the fan is near silent. I wouldn't recommend those for hardcore overclocking, but to replace a stock fan with little or no overclocking they're great.

So you are recommending http://www.newegg.com/Product/...118020&Tpk=CNPS%2b9700
for Quad Core 6600? I read reviews on it and seems it is LOUD at max RPM?

Yes and newegg reviews are crap. Never base decisions on them. It is NOT loud. 35dBA is not loud at all once you have it inside a case. Plus, you would not need to keep it on high, you could leave it on quiet mode and it will work fine keeping a non-overclocked Q6600 cool. at 19.5dBA.

You wanna talk about loud. My Panaflow H1-BX is at full on which is about 2600RPM and it's loud. I usually keep it at about half that with a fan controller. Even worse was the old Delta 80MM or 92MM fans I used to use back on an old AthlonXP

edit: I'd save some cash and get the one without the LED. Or try this http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835186134

That AC Freezer 7 Pro won't require you to remove your motherboard to install. It has the push pins similar to your stock HSF. It's not too large either.

I don't think it's particularly loud. Honestly your best bet is to spend the extra cash on a Thermalright Ultra 120 and get a super quiet Yate Loon 120MM fan for it. You'll never hear it and you'll keep your system much much cooler. I'd wager about 10c lower temps on the CPU at load.

I was trying to keep my recommendations to smaller HSFs, but it seems like many of them are quite loud like I mentioned before. Larger Heatsinks usually have larger fans running slower speed so you don't hear them.

What do you guys think of http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835106061

That Big Typhoon doesn't cool as well as a Scythe Ninja B, or the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme that cmdrdredd mentioned, but it should be fine, as long as you aren't overclocking (much), and have good case airflow.

He was looking something quiet that can replace Intel's HSF which from what I can tell, seems to run 100% on the fan with his Q6600. No overclocking. I'm just saying that he could get away with a super silent fan with a bigger heatsink.

The Big Typhoon or the Scythe Mine (a downward-facing blower and a fairly small tower cooler, respectively) are two options that should both be about $30. Both are pretty quiet (and the Big Typhoon uses a Yate Loon fan that's well-regarded for being quiet).
