qttask - keeps coming back

I keep removing it from the registry so it dosen't autorun, but generally when windows crashes (98se) it will then be in the registry AGAIN running at startup (rebooting normally dosen't bring it back, just crashing)

are there any other more permenant ways of removing it? (other than removing quicktime of course) 😛

You can kill it by going to Quicktime Player\Edit\Quicktime Preferences
then from the drop down select Update Checker, then uncheck the
Check for Updates Automatically

Well..what I did was first remove it from startup using 'msconfig'... then I when I reboot I go back to 'msconfig' to make sure its not there...then check the registry (shouldn't be there after unchecking it in msconfig)...now that its not there I delete 'qttask.exe' from the quicktime folder (and the qttask file in the prefetch folder if you are using XP). So far it hasnt come back to haunt me...so far so good 😀

Quicktime works fine without it...so see if that works.

auto update has been unchecked all along, if it keeps coming back I might just try nuking the exe itself.

As far as I can tell qttask.exe is loaded under Win2k and up somewhere in the actual .ocx control, which you kind of need to run Quicktime. But fear not; deleting the .exe has no effect that I can tell on your system whatsoever, and still allows for QT files to be played. I wouldn't exactly recommend deleting it though; try renaming it qttask.ex_

And yes, spyware and invasive programming is becoming far too common anymore. Everyone seems to be crafting business models after Micro$oft... bleagh.
