Qosmio lappy is getting creepy...

My 4 year old Qosmio laptop with Windows Xp will boot to the desktop, but at that point it starts powering down, then before the desktop is totally down, it powers back up again. I can't do anything, though the mouse and keyboard are working. I thought I'd re-format the obviously old hard drive, and re-install the OS, but before I do that I'm wondering if the hard drive is probably going? It's an IDE drive (Toshiba) that came with the machine. Or does this sound like a worse problem? I can't run any of the onboard diagnostics in Windows, obviously. Should I load Hard Drive Mechanic, or similar, and check the hard drive for errors? I'm only moderately competent at computer issues.

Thanks!

I ran a suite of pc utilities and everything is fine, hardware wise. Motherboard, memory, hard drive, pci, video.

I'm re-installing the OS.

I know this has everyone riveted to their computers. 🙂

Ok. Before I update, it's now working. 🙂 I'll update the Xp OS, which should take about two hours given my connection. 🙂 Let's see if that was the problem the last time.

After re-installing the OS, everything's working fine. Even after the updates. Go figure. 🙂
