I have a question for those more familiar with QoS and networking than I...

We're in the middle of comparing SR to our VOIP from TimeWarnerCable (using standard RoadRunner) - so we have the following setup:

Cable Modem: TWC supplied Webstar Modem w/ phone jack
Router: D-Link DI-524 (have access to a Linksys BEFW11S4 if needed)

Modem -> Router -> Gizmo -> Phone_B
Modem - > Phone_A
Router -> Computer

The gizmo lights up full right away and the incoming voice quality is great - but if I upload anything > 10kB/s I break up horribly to others.

Figuring it was a router related QoS thing, I went moved the gizmo ahead of the router:

Modem -> Gizmo-> Router -> Computer
Modem -> Phone_A
Gizmo -> Phone_B

Unfortunately, I was still breaking up if I have an upload going at > 10kB/s. Then after about an hour of leaving it this way both computers lost their internet connection, so I went back to the first setup.

Use of either phone has no effect on the other.

Is it possible that the QoS of the cable modem (supplied by TWC) is somehow limiting my entire downstream setup? The TWC phone never has issues - even when maxing my upload at 40kB/s, which I assume is because of the QoS of the modem. I don't have the old "non-digital phone" modem from TWC to test it with anymore.

I have my computer setup with a static IP in the router's DMZ. I did nothing special for the SR gizmo.

Today's speed test from dslreports: 4565 / 356 (kbps) - about normal for me.

I should caveat this with saying that (when not uploading) the TWC and SR voice quality is similar. We're noticing some echoing (of our own voices) with the SR setup - we used to have the same thing when we first got the TWC digital phone, but it went away after a month or so (or we got used to it).

If you go look at the last page of the Sunrocket thread in the hot deals forum, you'll find I just went through this same thing.

Put the Gizmo AHEAD of your router for the Sunrocket. I had to do this because, for whatever reason, the QoS of the router was not doing a good enough job. Also note that you'll need to log into the SR gizmo and turn on QoS and set the Uplink and Downlink speeds to the full tested speed of your network. ALSO note that the SR Gizmo (assuming Innomedia here) has the Uplink and Downlink values REVERSED due to a firmware bug, so you'll need to switch them.

The Sunrocket Gizmo (Innomedia version) actually seems to be have excellent QoS on my network - it only limits it when a call is going out of coming in.

Hope that helps. The Time Warner probably has it set up prior to shipping (that's my guess)- the Sunrocket does not, that's a fact.

I have a newer 8-port linksys router and the QoS isn't worth crap, nor is putting the gizmo in the DMZ or opening all the ports, or any combination thereof.
