Actually I've heard a lot of success stories with people using exim with administrators coming from all sorts of
different backgrounds and experience. If you want to have fun setting up an MTA use qmail, if you just want to
get it working, try something else first 😉
 
We use qmail because sendmail is known to have had a bad history of security problems. These days, I am really not sure if it is that bad of a solution though. I know sendmail is much easier to manage since there are a variety of gui interfaces to work with it. Qmail is pretty slim on the ease of administration. Of course, if you set it up right to begin with, you shouldn't have to touch it too often.
