Just because a bunch of prepubescent nerds on a message board THINK it means "For the Win" doesn't undue 40+ years of popular meaning.

Incorrect. Words can get their definitions from the usage. Don't make me beat you with a dictionary to prove my point.

And internet gaming geeks are not the most popular usage in the world of that acronym.

Either way, its friggan retarded. All you see are noobs registered in 2005 using FTW or QFT in 90% of the threads.

Seriously, have you looked at some of the recent additions to the dictionary?

"Most popular" has nothing do to with it. Linguistics isn't a popularity contest, you can have more than one definition per word ya know.

That has to be the most rapid contradiction I have ever seen. First you say words get their definition from usage (popularity) then you deny popularity defines words?

Which is it?

To the majority of the English speaking world, FTW means "Fsck The World." The fact that a tiny minority of internet gaming geeks thinks it means "For The Win" does not change that.

Where did I ever say the *most* popular usage is the only accepted definition? In fact, where the hell did I even say "popular". Read my posts again. I said "words can get their definition from usage". Usage doesn't have to be popular or even common, see the list I linked to for examples. When's the last time you used "granny dumping" or "superchurch"? I haven't until this thread.

If people use FTW as "for the win", as well as "fvck the world", both definitions will be accepted. Simple as that.

edit: as far as "common usage" goes yes it would have to be common to the group of people using the term. So if it's common for "computer users" to use the term it could be accepted as a definition. My statement earlier about me using those words isn't a good point. The definition should be common to the people expected to use it.

With an acronym, people will assume the most popular usage when they see it.

THAT, is what my original post, and follow up post was saying. Who the fsck cares if some tiny subsets of society use it differently? MOST will assume to most popular and oldest usage.

Gah, your too fast, see edit above.

Well while were at it acronyms can have many different meanings depending on audience and industry.

ATM = automated teller machine (place to get cash)
ATM = Asychronous Transfer Mode (communication technology based on cells rather than frames)
ATM = I'm sure there are others.

FWIW

But still for most all people ATM is a place to get cash.

FTW will always be Fvck the world. who the hell made up For the win?

It is 4TW; been used on battle.net for quite some time. FTW is incorrect and used by n00bs.

Like Amused noted, FTW has been around for decades... I know of an old biker who had it tattooed on his shoulder over 30 years ago.

It of course means F the world, but in nice company he will tell people it means "feel the wind". I kid him and say it means "free the Willy".

QFT = Quotoed for trusth
FTW = Fvck the world or For the win (depending on which message board you're on)

Now you know.

i've also seen FTW used for "for the weak"

At one point I thought QFT meant something similar to QED, an abbreviation for the Latin phrase "quod erat demonstrandum" ("that which was to be demonstrated"). QFT is used in somewhat similar circumstances, and they both start with Q! Yay! 😀
