Q8400 Core temps ~50 - "CPU" Temp 103 Abit IP35 Pro

Just dropped a Q8400 in my Abit IP35 Pro and put my Arctic Cooler on top with AS5.
Individual cores are showing 50 or less while "CPU" temp is way up there over 100. I think this may also be called the Tj. Max temp.
I have the IP35 Pro at latest bios on website, but the machine keeps shutting itself down, I presume because of this high "CPU" reading. My suspicion is this is an incorrect reading since the cores are in the normal range. While admittedly the Arctic Cooler is not the best solution it should be more than adequate for a stock setup.
I went ahead and ordered a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus as a precaution. I double checked good contact between heatsink and cpu.
I can change the setting in the BIOS to stop the shutdown if "CPU" temp exceeds 100C, but wanted to get some other opinions before I go do something rash.

What program are you using to read those temps? I use Real Temp 3.6 as my program of choice. Core Temp is solid too for these CPUs.

Anyway, TJ Max isn't a reading, its the scale used to take the reading, so to speak. The sensors are programed to know exactly what a certain temp feels like (TJ Max) which should be about 100'C. The sensors actually ready your offset from this temperature and do a little math to present you with an estimated current temperature.

Anyway, I'd suggest booting up real temp since it reads all temps, TJ Max, Minimum since you started and Maximum since you started from all 4 cores individually. Then run some games or a benchmark and see what happens with the readings.

Thanks for reply. Actually it's the bios on the Abit board reporting this high temp and Uguru (Abit's utility). I wonder if it is combining all 4 core temps.
I beleive I was using real temp last night and it was only reporting the 4 core temps, I will double check again tonight. It was giving me the temp reading for each core and how far till 100.
I may just have to turn off the bios temp actions (shutdown when above 100C) since the core temps are totally in the green according to the other utils I was using.

Its the BIOS - ABIT never updated the BIOS for the new quad core CPU's - I have the same issue with my Q8300.

You can use the beta 18 bios which correctly reports the temperature in uGuru and also re-enables VT [at least for my CPU], but beware that it's finicky. I encountered random BSOD's and weird random temperature spikes [all 4 cores would suddenly spike to 100+ C and cause Windows 7 to shut down].

Reinstalling BIOS 16 helped resolve BSOD's and random temperature spikes - but now there is a random issue with failing to boot even though the uguru temp monitoring is switched off. I don't think it's the power supply as the motherboard historically has been finicky anyway [going to try a more powerful PSU and see how it goes].

Maybe it's just telling me it's time to upgrade to 1156/Sandybridge solution.

I'm running the P35 pro with a Q9500 with no issues on the beta 18 bios. It's the most stable system I've ever used. This might be just an issue with the 8x00 series. Any bios before 18 was not usable on the Q9500 and reported temps were all over the place (and 100% wrong).

I've seen a few other's saying the temp issue was resolved with the last 18 beta bios, but they too had random issues (BSOD's, lockups, etc).
The Q8400 was my stop gap until Sandy worked itself out and got cheaper. I encode quite a bit of video so a going from a dual to a quad core was a boost. I am using the latest offical BIOS which is 17.
I guess I will try turning off the temp checks in the BIOS and see if that works for me. My dual core on v16 worked great.

Edit: Binky may be right. Isn't the Q8xxx series fairly new? The last update for the IP35 was in 2008.

the cpu temp which the program i think your refering to is messures the diode below the cpu.

The cpu wont have any effect on it, because its a temp diode below.

The value ur thinking is a CPUID value, which we can only get though CPUID programs like realtemp and coretemp and HWmonitor... ect.

Now your telling me your cpu value is way up there, that tells me you have an insufficient sink, and your board is getting way too hot.

What is your chipset temp out of curiosity?

yeah im fairly sure CPU is the diode below the cpu inside the cpu socket.

For it to be reporting values that high... either its a bad diode, or your chip on the underside is getting really hot.

can u try to feel behind the motherboard panel where your cpu would be.. does it feel very warm?

I have q9550 and thats close to the way mine is with stock sink at stock clock, at 72f room temp the cores at idle are 39 28 and the other 2 have a stuck sensor that doesnt show anything below 41.

I keep it at 55f in here in the winter so my temps will be around 29c at idle and 52C at full load.

That sounds more normal than your OP. Still a little high regardless; I get around 38/36/33/32 with my setup, granted a TRUE beats an AC, but I doubt you are running over 1.5v through your chip! (Sadly, I am)

Anyway, I'd go with aigomorla on this one. Check cautiously with a hand (make sure to ground yourself first just in case!) and see what it feels like behind the socket, but sounds more like a faulty sensor to me!

My Q8200 reads rediculously high temps no matter what TIM, HSF, FAN combo's I throw at it. The bios reads low temps (20's) but in windows it's always 46c at a normal 70f room temp. I'm assuming they are all 15C above what they actually are, so I'm not worried. No blue screens even at 65C. It never goes above 65C anymore either.

I think these Q8xxx have bad sensors. That's all.

Those readings were with a fresh AS5 layer applied. Checked it this morning and the idle temps were all in the mid to low 30's. I felt the heatsink last night and it was not warm at all and felt around the MB and it was room temp. Can't get to the back of the board without unmounting it.
At this point I feel confident it's running within tolerances. I bumped the FSB up 20% last night and ran Prime for a few hours. 63 was the higest temp on any of the cores. Core voltage is at default. I'll have the Coolermaster tomorrow so I can feel the back of the board then and should see a drop in temps also. From my reading it looks like these boards don't have the microcode for the Q8xxxx procesors. Quite a few complaints of incorrect temp readings with quad core processors. I've turned off all the uGuru stuff and have Core Temp set to shut down the system if a core get's above 80.

Wanted to post a quick update if anyone happens to have this problem. I found a beta bios for the IP35 Pro which is 18. Installed that and the temps are now reading properly and no more random reboots.
Ran prime for 12 hours on a 20% overclock and all is good.
