Q6600, why is F@H only running on one core?

currently working on a WU in F@H, i have a Q6600 with 4 cores, why does speedfan only show one core fully loaded?

task manager also shows FahCore_XX.exe locked at a max 25% CPU usage... (i say locked because it doesn't go up or down from 25)

Are you running the SMP client or the normal client? Normal client won't use more than one core.

i've been instructed to run the SMP version so i uninstalled the normal client and am now running: SMP Client V1.01

their website says to run install.bat so i click on it and it asks me for: account <domain\user> [LOUIS_XP\LouisW]: _(what do i put here?)_
password: (what password?)
confirm password:

then it says Credentials for Louis_XP\LouisW rejected connecting to louis_xp
Aborting: Unable to connect to louis_xp
press any key to continue . . .

then it exits

help on how to get the multicore version of FaH running please

It is requesting the login for the computer that you are using. The domain is your computer, the username is your Windows login username, and the password is the windows login password for that user account. If you are using windows without a password, then you will have to create a password (not a bad idea anyway if you are running without a password). For the domain/user, usually you can just use the default.

Just an FYI

If you don't want to have to type your password to login each time you start your machine you've got two options. One, you can create another user account with a password and use that. Or set a password for your normal account and download tweakUI from Microsoft to set your account to auto login with your new password.

TweakUI:

okay i got the SMP console version up and running and its fully loading my Q6600 100%. is there a way i can control the load on it? for example, get it to run only on 2 cores at a time (50% usage) or 3 cores (75% usage)?

Not AFAIK ,but then I'm a folding newb;) ,why do you want to do that anyway?

Btw awesome o/c for such low voltage!:Q:cool:

Mine's currently at 3GHz @1.3V ,though I will hopefully be able to go higher now I have a better HSF.

thanks, it looks like i got a pretty good chip with a low VID (1.215) G0

i'd want to do that maybe to lighten the load on my cpu so temps won't be so high 24/7 when i dont want them to be

The SMP client will always start four FahCore_a1.exe processes. Even if you only have one core. A future client may have option to select how many cores to run on.

There is something that may help, depending on why you want to run on less than all cores.

There is an option in configuration to set what percent of the CPU(s) you want the client to run at. If you are noticeing a lag during use you could try setting F@H to use 95% of CPU or less if that does not help. (I seem to remember 89% as being a magic number on slower single core systems.)

yea i think thats what i'm looking for, how can i limit the cpu usage %?

I don't know you need to set that. I had a lan party over the new year, and the house was filled with kids. No system had F@H closed down, and no lag anywhere, it gives up sycles very easy.

Right click the fah.exe and select Create Shortcut. Rename the shortcut to configonly. Right click that new shortcut and select Properties. In the Target textbox, at the end of what is in there, add a space, a dash, and the flag like so: C:\fah\fah.exe -configonly

When you run configuration you will be asked questions, if you have run it before some questions will have default answers and you can just hit Enter, like with your name and TeAm number. When you get to "Enter Advanced Options?" answer yes. When you get to the question asking: CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]? just type in 95 and see how many degrees lower the temps are. If they don't go down enough rerun your config shortcut and try 90 or whatever.

The client MUST be shutdown before running config.

EDIT: If you lower the usage too much it might not finish the WU in the short SMP deadlines.

Might it be better to lower the OC to lower the temps instead?

Ah I see ,well in that case you'd be better off lowering clock speed & vcore a little.
What temps are you getting running F@H?

If you're worried about temps, get a better cooler. There's nothing wrong with running a CPU 24/7. That's the way they should be run, IMHO. Unused CPU cycles are wasted cycles.

The Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme is king ! I think many have proved that, but the Tunic tower is very good.

True but there isn't much between them.

Louis
So what temps are you getting running F@H then?:p

You could always go back to using only one core... Though that will reduce your output by 75%

Change setting to team 33 and username Rebel44 - your temps will drop by at least 5C - I promise :)

BTW, here is a new one. I am running F@H SMP on a C2D using win2k. I was getting 1300 ppd. I used the affinity program, and now an getting 1800 ppd. ! It seems to have a use in dual-cores also. I think I tried it on a C2D using XP, but I am not positive now.

Yeah we just reached 700 000 000 points milestone and more then 1 100 000 PPD :)

Its much better challenge to reach top 100 when you are folding for best team in the world :D
