Q6600 v.s. Q9550

So I'm in the process or building a whole new system. I'm on a tight budget. I was originally planning to get the Q9550. But it's quite expensive. I was told you won't see much of a difference because the 6600 can be overclocked like hell. I'm looking to play some of the new games but I"m not a real big gammer.

So far what I"m looking at

HD 4870 (radeon) 1gig version

Motherboard: I'm looking at the P45 chipset from what I understand it's a good mainstream chipset. I'm looking at the Gigabyte EP45-DS3R. It's a value line board however it has all of the nice features of the higher end boards. and it's a p45 chipset.

If you're going to overclock, Q6600 all the way. Just get sufficient cooling. Otherwise, if you're going for milder OC and care more about keeping the temp down, Q9550.

+1 q6600 and overclocking

You can use cheaper DDR2-800 ram and mainboard, the 9* multi helps.
But it will consume more power and you will need a good cooler.

That recent deal on the Q6700 for $209 comes to mind ... the 10 multi helps you out a bit as well.

Q6600 for the win

My temps are the same at stock as they are at idle (no voltage increase needed)

Get a good cooler and your away.

Higher multiplier will definitely help. Cheap Q6700 or standard Q6600 over the Q9550 any day.
