Q6600 G0 or Q8400 for video production/motion gfx?

I got offered to switch my Q6600 G0 for a Q8400 so I was wondering if it would be more suitable for programs such as Cinema 4D, Adobe After Effects and Sony Vegas Pro?

Benchmark scores show mixed results therefore I'm not sure what to do, especially considering the much lower L2 cache size of the Q8400. But on the other hand it might generate less heat and require lower voltages for a higher OC.

Also, I've read that the max multiplier for the Q8400 is 8x which might be a problem while overclocking since my ocz reapers require 400mhz fsb in order to run at 1066mhz.

I don't know about the other programs but Sony Vegas Pro 12 and higher benefit greatly from a decent video card.

Exactly.. Use of a good GPU greatly improves render time.
Best improvement I made was dropping a GTX 560TI in to my Q6600..
Render times were pretty much in real time (30fps). Once I dropped in the 560 with CUDA, renders happened at 120-175fps. Better to do this than CPU.

The gpu is not the problem, I bought a GTX 570 Sonic Platinum for $140 a month ago.

Sony Vegas Pro 12 and later do benefit from a GPU but only when exporting to certain video formats. Pre-rendering is handled by the cpu as well as the amount of ram allocated for the preview.

After Effects relies on cpu, ram and CUDA cores in some instances (Element 3D for example).

Cinema 4D on the other hand is entirely cpu dependent.

The other day I tried rendering a scene in C4D using Vray and all the possible effects turned on. As it turns out the rendering process required the same amount of cpu and ram usage as playing Crysis 3 on High settings (both reached 79°C according to core temp).

very little difference between the 6600 and 8400 series' they are in fact the same cpu, one is the refresh of the other. if this is costing you *any* money, it's too much

Yeah I figured. I'll probably go with a Q9550 E0 for $100 and sell my Q6600 for $80 lol.
