Hi fellow OCukers,

My system was running stable so I decided to run Prime95 25.4 at stock to make sure the CPU was fine before I started overclocking.

The first time I run it 2 cores failed at around 1 hour. Temps seemed to get up to around 58 for 2 cores and 53 for the other 2.

I had my memory running at 12 4 4 4 at default voltage so thought this may be the cause and changed it back to the default 15 5 5 5.

2nd time I ran Prime it failed within 1 minute on 1 core.

I ran it a 3rd time and this ran for around 30 minutes with 3 different cores failing.

I thought it maybe the C1R, TM2 and EIST so I disabled them all and ran it for a 4th time.

I left this overnight and this again had failed on 3 cores 1 core after 12minutes and the other 2 cores after 1 hour.

I am really upset as I have been waiting ages to build this rig and have bought some good quality components (in sig)

One thing I noticed is that the CPU voltage in bios is 1.2625V, but in CPU-Z it was between 1.184 and 2.000V - which to me is very low!!!!!!!

I have 2 screenies:-

You may try raising voltage -- I read sometimes BIOS voltage and "true" voltage differ and cause undervolt problems.

Raise bios voltage to 1.35v. Check what is read. If it is less than 1.35v with vdroop raise it until you get 1.35v under load.

Run CoreTemp to monitor the temperatures using SmallFFT testing all 4 cores. Watch the maximum temperatures before it fails and post back.

Also, make sure your motherboard bios is the latest version supporting G0 stepping Q6600 cpus.

Too much heat == restart.

G0 cores will work on all C2D supporting motherboards, you may get a cpu uCode error on bootup, but it will still go.

well at full load my cpu is at 60oC so i think its not overheating

update - its been running 2 hours in prime95

I know you've shifted the timings to looser settings, but have you actually confirmed that the ram is good by running Memtest?

well i started getting more fails, blue screens etc...... so tested with both memory again and it failed several times in Prime95 on different tests.......

UPDATE:

I have completed tests with both sticks of memory 1 at a time:-

Everything set at stock (slack timings):-
memory @ 5 5 5 18 @ 2.1V

STICK1 (PASSED)
---------
Memtest (2 runs - 40mins runtime) - PASS
Memtest (Test no5 - 1 Hour runtime) - PASS
Prime95 (In-place test 18hrs runtine) - PASS
Prime95 (Blend test 90mins runtime) - PASS
Prime95 (Small test 60mins runtime) - PASS
Company of Heroes (1st mission) - PASS

STICK2 - FAIL
--------
Memtest (Test no5 - 1 Hour runtime) - PASS
Prime95 (Small test 60mins runtime) - FAIL (Blue screened at 65mins)
Prime95 (Small test 6 hours) - PASS
Prime95 (Inplace test 4 mins) - FAIL (all 4 cores failed @ 4min 4min 3min 8min)
Prime95 (Inplace test 1 mins) - FAIL
Prime95 (Inplace test 2 mins) - FAIL

As you can see memory stick 2 failed a few times in Prime95 and blue screened once. It did pass memtest for 1 hour.

I dont like how stick 2 passed memtest again - but it failing in Prime must mean something....

Whatya think?

Thanks

You're not going to overclock successfully with that low default vcore. Bump it up to at least 1.35, even for preliminary testing, to take it out of the equation and isolate the memory problems.

You might also try 2.2 on the memory and switching memory slots from 1-3 to 2-4 or vice versa. Can you show us a screen shot of the SPD tab on CPU-Z?

If none of that helps, try raising the NB voltage one notch.

You're in the early stages and your temps are under control. Take your time, change one setting and test until you find the right combination for your gear.

It's possible you got one bad stick of ram, but you want to eliminate the other possibilities first.

i have tried running the vcore at 1.33 and it does the same...........

I am not really trying to overclock at the moment, just want a stable system first

1.40V Core
1:1 memory divider
2.1Vdimm
5-5-5-15-2T timing
Default FSB

You many need to raise NB and SB voltage one notch above 3.5GHz core speed.

Now bump FSB by 5MHz and test with Orthos Large mode for 5 minutes. Repeat until you fail Orthos. Back-off 3MHz FSB and test Orthos for one hour. Repeat until you can pass 1 hour Orthos. Run Memtest86 test #5 for 50 loops.

i am running my system at default mobo and processor........ I have tried upping the vcore voltage slightly and the mem voltage, but this doesnt work......

hey guys, i'm basically just reading this thread as a newbie to OC'ing just to gain some knowledge...when you run all these tests like memtest, prime95, and orthos...is this after you have installed an OS and have booted up or are you running these from BIOS or something? Thanks, just curious

Use the gigabyte utility that came with the mobo to verify your Vcore under load.

You want ~1.32v under load, this board droops a *LOT*.

Also the northbridge likes to overheat with quads, id stick a fan on it.

Memtest is run from a burned CD, the others are used in windows.

I just gave it a 5. No stupid questions even here, I agree Acanthus.

Now the comment about reboot=poor PSU performance ? I think it may also be poor motherboard. I have that problem on occasion with a 700 watt fortron ! I think it's the crap P5K motherboard with the horrible vdroop. I had it on my DQ6, but a Antec 550 was replaced with a Seasonic 550, and no more problems !

Am I missing something? It seems clear that your RAM stick 2 is defective and you should RMA it. You shouldn't have to overvolt something for it to work.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

I had tested the memory (read earlier posts) and 1 stick failed the other passed in Prime. The voltage was set to +0.3 (the memory is rated for 2.1V (1.8+0.3))

I dropped the voltage to +0.0 in the bios and the memory that was crashing passed Prime for 3 hours. I then decided to up the timings to 3 3 3 12 and it worked again for 9 hours last night. Bear in mind this is the memory that was crashing within 1 minute.

I have heard that this board may overvolt memory (absolutely crazy!!!!!) - so maybe one of the memory sticks dont like this higher memory voltage (especially if it the motherboard is overvolting it).

Also thinking back I had the memory voltage on AUTO when doing the first tests so maybe the errors occured before as the motherboard was AUTO putting it on a higher volt? I know im clutching at straws here.........

So youre running sticks that dont have the same default voltage?

Bad juju.

If this isnt the case and the sticks are the same memory (it appears from your rig that they are both 1GB XMS2 PC6400) and they wont work at the specified 2.1v, id just RMA them. It's not worth toying with hardware that doesnt work at spec to try to fudge it.
