Q6600 + Arctic Silver 5 = Way Too Hot!

Hey guys, my story starts with my motherboard cpu socket pins breaking after replacing my heatsink due to the fact I've been CONSTANTLY applying and re-applying arctic silver 5 thermal paste to try and get my heat acceptable. So, after getting my new motherboard and another go-round of the arctic silver five, my temps still suck. Previously, I had a 3.4Ghz OC with slight overvolting and idled at 35 degrees celcius. Now, I have to cut off the overvolt, and idle at 3Ghz at friggin 45-50 degrees celcius! What's the deal? I've tried every single flipping application method. My tuniq tower is seating more than snugly. All the case fans are firing on all cylinders. What on earth is the deal?

I'm starting to pull my hair out 🙁

I'm really hoping it's not a CPU issue, but could my CPU somehow be damaged and running too hot?

EDIT: Ambient room temperature has not changed

Post up a screenshot of your temps. What case are you using? How many fans?

Case: Sunbeam Transformer; Full Tower

Fans: Three 80mm fans, one 120mm fan, the chipset fan that came with the 750i Mobo, and the Tuniq Tower CPU cooler.

That case doesn't look very OC friendly at all. Try adding some high CFM fans. When i bought my Antec 800 the first thing i did was add 3 100cfm fans.

Or you could always just go water 🙂

I have been using that case for months with my old OC and sat at 35 degrees celcius idle and 65 MAX under 100% load with Prime95. I don't think it's the case 🙁

Take the case door off and run it like that to see if temps dramatically drop. Easiest way to tell

Hokay, here goes, post the results in a bit.

EDIT: Nothing doing. However, I did wiggle the heat sink around and get to 46 Degrees 🙁

Bleargh

how long have you had the arctic silver in for? i believe there is a cure or break in time for it to settle.

'couple of hours, but why would it skyrocket my temps in the first place? 🙁

Dont' know can arctic silver go bad? I've had other pastes go bad and become a wonderful insulator.

OP, touch each heatpipe between the base of the heatsink and the fins. Are all of them getting warm?

I'll check, hold on

All of them are slightly warm, but pretty much cool to the touch.

Then again, it's a Tuniq Tower, so touching the right spot might be impossible without taking the thing out. I pretty much touched the pipes as low as I could.

your idle temps are within spec, but more importantly they are not nearly as important as 100% load temps, prime95 with small fft should do the trick. get to it...

AS5 is probably not your issue if you keep applying and reapplying. contact pressure is extremely important as well

you also replaced your motherboard. perhaps it is overvolting.

take any and all of your voltages off of auto.

I'm not sure about this but maybe there is a slight chance your motherboard is relaying or reporting inaccurate temps to your probing software

M'kay, I'll take it off of auto and see how it does. Checking loads now......

EDIT: Quick stress test got it to 67-ish, so I'm guessing it'd cap out around 70 degrees if I left it on. Can't check the volt issue just now, formatting my other HD

I had a tuniq myself, I think you need to check fitting. if you start with a decent oc and resonable temp then it became hotter I think your tuniq has gotten loose. either that or the fan on the tuniq isn't going at a reasonable rate, get speedfan to check the rpm out.

Is the board you replaced different than the board you killed? Sounds like the new board is probably just providing more accurate voltage with less Vdroop, which would make any difference in temps more obvious if you're increasing voltage. I'd agree though, your temps aren't that far off considering your case cooling could use improvement.

How about when under load?

Have you checked for dust lodged in the fins and around the fan? Pull the fan out and check it.

That Tuniq cooler is heavy. Almost 800 grams without the fan. I would think that if you can wiggle it and get better cooling, it isn't mounted tight enough?

Try flipping the case horizontally so the tunic is placed vertically. it MUST be bad cpu to heatsink contact. I am almost sure. The heatpipes MUST be HOT. Since you touchet them and they seem rather cool, that means the contact is bad.
