Q6600 and prime95

I just put together my new computer today. I have a q6600 which i planned to start overclocking. I started prime95 at the stock 2.4ghz speed just to see where the temperatures are sitting. Temperatures seem to be sitting around 45C using Core Temp. I got a rounding error with no overclocking on one of the cores after 10 minutes. The voltage in core temp is showing at 1.3volts. Any idea what would cause this to happen? I would of assume at stock speeds the cpu should easily pass.

hardware is:
Q6600 /w Tuniq Tower
Gigabyte EP35-DS3R
2gig Corsair ddr2-800
Antec P182
Corsair 550VX PSU

Yes it certainly should pass at stocks. But this is why it is a good idea to stress test any new hardware at stock before overclocking.

Have you ran memtest+ to verify the ram is ok?

And what about Prime95 blend and large FFT? Do those pass ok?

No i haven't run memtest+. I guess i should test that out to see where it leads me. Prime95 is set to blend right now while running it seems to be doing ok except for the 1 core it failed on.

Once it fails for one core the test is not going to generate any more useful results.

That is really not good if it failed on blend, that is not the most challenging stress test. Small FFT is far more aggressive.

But blend tests the FSB (MCH, northbridge) much more than the small FFT. So this suggests your NB is too hot or undervolted. Do you have good airflow over your northbridge?

at first glance, i think its a ram problem, maybe not enough voltage on the ram? set up vCore to 1.3, vRam to whatever its specified for maybe 1.9-2.0? default on ur mb is 1.8 so do +0.1v or +0.2v. then bump up each of your other voltages a notch or two, like the NB & MCH. probably two. then try the tests again

I'm showing the system temperature at 31C. Started running memtest and I already got a failure pretty quick in test3. I was showing ddr voltage on hwmonitor around 1.87 volts.

It's stumbling all over test4 as well i guess i'll play with the memory voltage a bit. I did notice my memory is running at 2:3 at 400mhz. I wanted to run a 1:1 i need to play with the bios a bit its quite a bit different than my last board.

Bingo! We have a winner. Drop your memory multiplier, relax your timings and up the Vdimm (keep <2V). If that doesn't help memtest then its time to talk about RMA'ing some dimms.

Well, I have the ram running at 266mhz along with the FSB. I put the voltage up to +.2 in the bios and i'm still failing on test3. Guess the ram is bad. Is there anything else i could do or i might be missing?

Not likely anything to do. I had similiar experience with some mushkin ram when it started to fail on me. You could try pulling sticks to isolate whether it is a specific stick or a specific dimm slot on the mobo. If it is a defective dimm slot then you'll need to rma the board.

Seems to fail with both sticks in any slot. Guess it's time to RMA.

Only seems to fail on test3 now.
