Q6600 after 2.1Ghz Athlon XP is such a treat!

It's awesome

Q6600/Asus P5Q Pro/4GB DDR2 Kingston kit/Asus 3450 from 2000+AXP@2600+/Asus A7V8X/1.5 GB DDR/6800GS@U

The 3450 is just a stop-gap until the 4850's come down a bit.

No overclocking just yet, just enabled Speedstep and left it at stock, it's more than fast enough for me (superpi is 21s, which is about right I think?).

The mobo is just awesome, and the EPU-6 utility is quite fun.

Not quote.

I'll be going from a A64 3200 to a Q9300 in the next coming weeks, I'm glad you like.. I hope for a similar experience. 🙂

Those "snappy" comments are usually the harbinger of a pro-AMD post...count me surprised to see someone attribute an Intel system as being snappy!

Yeah I went from a P4C at 2.4GHz to a QX6700 at 4GHz (vapoLS) and it was like being slapped in the face for how quickly I was able to cruise around my system and get stuff done.

I'm still on XP though, pretty sure the performance delta would have been even more startling had I been using Vista on the old system when I jumped to my quad.

Congrats dug777! 😀 Glad to see positive results to your choice. As what IDC has stated of "How quickly he is able to cruise around", is so true. You have got a great chip there and as time goes by, you will get extreemly spoiled by it! When it comes time to OC it, ( if at all ) 3.0 - 3.2 seems to be the norm and that is when this chip really starts to shine. So, if your are happy now, just wait...........<----------getting the itch yet?🙂

Having recently switched back to AMD from a C2D rig, I definately consider the system "snappier" so I think their is something to the AMD model. Probably the intergrated memory controller is responsible but my system not only feel faster, it is more stable(less errors in Windows/Apps).

I know how you're feeling dug. Just yesterday, I upgraded my from my 2500+ AXP@3000+/MSI KT6/1GB DDR400/ 6600GT to a E8400/Gigabyte EP35-DSL/2GB DDR2-800/8800GS.

I wasn't ready to jump on the quad-core bandwagon yet. Maybe later. What's most impressed me so far is how quiet this new system is. I used speedfan on my old AXP, but the case was really old and I had to run with the sides off for cooling and it was loud.

With my new system, I got a Cooler Master 690 case, and the thing is whisper quiet. It was kind of tough to talk myself into upgrading, but I'm glad I did.

If your Intel build was causing system stability issues then I would not be surprised if it also had issues with responsiveness. Diseases often have multiple symptoms. You likely had a flaky mobo or memory stick.

I am excited for ya. I hope my experience is decent too. I am a pro-AMD person going to the "dark-side" I just parted out my K8N-Pro sli/X2 4400 Toledo/3G corsair (dual channel) for my coming purchase which will be a Asus P5Q/Q6600 G0/4GB Mushkin 1066 kit. On top of that If the fund's will it I am going to slap a Xigmatek 1238 or a Tuniq Tower

forgot to mention I will be keeping my 8800GTS 320

I thought of those things so I checked the ram with Memtest and got no errors. I had been using a P965 mobo from Gigabyte and exchanged that for a basic intel P35 mobo and still ended up with problems. I had an E4400 that I bought the day they first became available and suspect I might have gotten a bum cpu.

Good for you Dug. I remember how thrilled i was going from a 3GHz P4 to a AMD 4600+ X2 processor! It was like night and day. My 2.9GHz X2 is still doing great for me. I'll upgrade again when Nehalem comes out.

For now, no reason. 🙂

Going from an AMD 64 3500+/MSI 7105/1GB G Skill/ATI X1800XT to the Q6600/Abit IP35P/4 GB ddr2/4850...
Looking forward to this, I have been an AMD fan for quite awhile and simply decided to try Intel...Sort of Like finally buying a Yamaha Stratoliner 1900cc bike after 2 straight Yamaha RoadStar 1600cc bikes....Just wanted to try something new!

Performance from an xp3200+ to Q6600 was indeed a large one. Purely in terms of science, I went from 200-300 ppd in F@H to about (still tweaking) 3000ppd. So yeah, here's to the next upgrade!

Cheers folks

This thing is beefcake!

I just discovered Media Centre, and it works perfectly with my HDTV tuner, no need to use the junky DVICO software 🙂

New versions of the ICH10R drivers and the EPU-6 engine to install already, it's like Christmas in July!

EDIT: & I rather daringly upped the RAM speed too 😉

I made a similar jump. Similar time frame for our parts but I had higher end parts originally. Comparable leaps in performance but it looks like you took an even bigger jump forward.

Old rig:
P4 3.0ghz 800fsb
Gigabyte 8KNXP
2gb (4x512) DDR 400 HyperX LL
Radeon X1950 Pro
Raptor 74gb

New rig:
Q6600 @ 3.1ghz
Asus P5Q Pro
4gb (2x2gb)
Asus Radeon 4850
Raptor 74gb, Spinpoint F1 750gb.

Overall I don't feel it being much "snappier". My desktop performance before was fine. I loaded apps fine, no lag in Office, Web, Adobe creative suite. Flash would start to lag a little due to CPU I think (the vector scaling), video and audio encoding were starting to get weak in comparison to modern systems.
My A/V rendering and video game performance was terrible, that's why I upgraded. Huge bottleneck for my video game performance was my CPU bottleneck as the X1950 Pro at 1280x1024 resolutions was more then capable of getting moderate results for games like WoW.

Oh and OP, prices on the 4850 are as low as $135-150 AR.

Very weird someone going from AMD to INTC says that the system is "snappy." Often times we hear the opposite that the system is "slow."

Glad you like the system.

You two still remember Snappyboy, I see. I still cringe every time I see the word "snappy" in an AMD/Intel thread , and it's been months since that troll was sent packing.

Exactly. Forever burned into a synaptic connection in my head. Too bad I haven't been upgraded with the capability of forced cache eviction...need to get the wetware upgrade one of these days.

Heehee. I know the feeling, I went from an Opteron 165 @ 2.7 to a Q6600 at 3.6, and the performance difference is phenomenal, especially gaming.

I did feel bad jumping from AMD to Intel, though, every CPU I had bought was AMD up until now...

Some months ago I finally left my Athlon XP 2400+/Radeon 9600Pro for an E2160/Geforce 9600GT. The E2160s were so cheap and I had heard so many stories of phenomenal overclocking that I just had to get one. I also got a 9600GT at a pretty good price at the time as well, though I'm sort of wishing I could've gotten the 4850 right now for a similar price. Hitting 3GHz on stock cooling was no problem and the performance difference between my old rig was pretty insane, especially going to dual-core.
