Q3A network/multiplayer question...

Ok... Hmm. (I'm crossposting this from the software forum, cuz it's possibly
a hardware/network problem... maybe?)

Well, I spent the last two days getting 3 computers connected on a LAN
and sharing a cable modem internet connection. When trying to play
Quake Arena (my kid's a lot better than I am) I was hoping that 2 or even
all 3 of us could all join a multiplayer server and thus all play together.
If we try, only one of us seems to be able to join a server at a time. The
others just countdown and timeout. Is it possible for us to all play Internet
play on the same server, while we share a connection? We can play each
other, locally... but we'd like to play on the Internet with their Uncle, who
is out of town. (I also wanted to watch in Spectator mode, it's a blast watching
my kid).

The LAN is a cable modem hooked into a Linksys Etherfast Cable Router and
then from there, we're all jacked into the Router. Anyone else done this, or know
of a workaround??

(BTW, I love this forum, soooo glad I found it!) <B>

each online player needs their own IP...with your setup, there's only 1 IP (the router's) for all of you.

therefore, i don't know of any way that you could all play at once 🙁

I just spent several days fighting with this exact problem. First off, can all of your machines see each other through the router? If so then you have to have one of them host the game and you foward the port through the router to that machines IP. After that, connect the other 2 machines through the local network not the internet. On my network, I host the game on my server and foward the port to that machine, then I can connect the other 3 boxes locally and still play online with anyone who joins the game. if this is too vague, let me know and I'll be more specific.

I've been able to connect multiple machines to the same Q3 server in the past.. I think both with stuff like Wingate (ugh!!) and even the current Netgear RT314 router I have. The server should see it as one computer connecting (same IP address).. the packets should get marked as to what machine on the lan they came from when they left.. and packets that come back should know which machine to go to. One of my friends is using a linux proxy server and he and his roommates have no problem connecting multiple computers to a Q3 server on the internet.
