"UT netcode sucks, its graphics are dated and suck, the weapons are lame, and its not nearly as fluid as Q3. The Q3 engine is WAY better than the unreal engine. Q3 is great with the mods but isnt good by itself. The mods are what make quake games great and carmack makes it easy to make mods."

where to begin..

first off, have you played UT on the same computer as Quake 3?

second off, it's graphics are NOT bad. they are very good, almost on par with Q3 (especially with texture compression, see Benskywalker's UT thread). what do you mean it's not as fluid as Q3? it's perfectly fast. oh wait, do u use the Geforce? well maybe it's the Geforce's DX drivers that aren't up to snuff, because 3dfx's cards (Voodoo 3 and up) all run it in DX fine.

you said it yourself, Q3 isn't good by itself. you now say that MOD's make the difference? I'm sorry but that's a bunch of bull. UT also has alot of MOD's too, but the original has ALOT of things you can do.

This UT vs Q3 thing is very old and very boring.

A heck of a lot of people have played both and made their choices. Are people stupid for choosing one over the other?, no, both games have a different feel and people are responding to it.

It will be interesting to see how Elite Forces fares, i like the demo-but wasnt blown away by it. People will be drawn to it simply because it is a Star Trek game, others will shun it for the same reason.

Of all the Trekkie games i have seen, it is certainly the best(IMHO)

Quake3 isn't a game, it's an engine demo 🙂

Damn impressive engine, but still an engine demo.
Don't get me wrong I've had lots of fun with Q3, but it's really not that great of a game.

Lord, I hate Star Trek! I'm downloading this demo now though. After suffering with Unreal Version 1.0 I was pleasently surprised by UT. I'm hoping this will pan out the same way. Please tell me the demo will run over a LAN.

Not to beat a dead horse but I prefer UT to Q3A and it plays blazing fast on my Radeon. I just started playing with the Strike Force mod and it rocks. It's very realistic. Can't wait until they release the full blow version of Strike Force.

I'm downloading both versions (demo and full) of Elite Forces right now. Usenet rules! 😉

Well I tried the demo and this is my take: the purple effect of that one gun is nifty. Otherwise it looks like a MOTS game.

the demo was cool, cant wait for the full game - but I felt the DM was a little lacking.. although you do get to kill nexlix.. and that's always a bonus 😉

Well, I don´t think you get the point of this: After playing Elite Force (the retail version, not the demo, which has worse graphics and not very impressive gameplay), there won´t be UT and Q3 anymore...Elite Force is just way cooler than those titles.Try it out, and you´ll know what I mean....Q3 doesn´t mean anything anymore...Star Trek rules (finally, this time around). Did you ever think killing your oppponents on the bridge of voyager? You got cloaking devices, jet packs and all...the demo isn´t representative of all this....

I'm sure that Elite Force is a great game. But saying that it's going to supplant Q3A and UT as the DM game of choice is kind of ridiculous.

And as far as UT vs Q3A, yeah, it's tired, but it's still fun 🙂

UT = Beautiful graphics, but the way your character moves makes me think that the engine was built using an underwater physics model. And the netcode is still not up to par. I've played them both on my machine, and Q3A just works better as far as DMing is concerned. UT tries really hard to bill itself as more than DM with its "storyline," but when it comes down to it, that's all it really is.

Q3A = A game of skill and speed. Some people hate its lack of substance, but I look at it as unrivaled in its purity. Kill or be killed. Perfect control, perfect weapon balance, and damn fast. What DM was meant to be.

Heh, we will see-somehow i doubt it.

It's installed on both PCs now. Very nice install. Not a single glitch and no reboot either. I'm impressed. It's running in the background as I type this.

Our secondary PC is running an Elite Force server and mine is connected to that. I'd like to know why my PC insists on dialing out when I connect to the IPX server. I know our IPX is not bound to the dial-up adapter. Q3A does the same thing. Anybody know how to disable this?

TIA,
Ornery

This is an apples and oranges comparison guys. Q3A and UT are NOT true FPSs, they're First Person Deathmatch games. Comparing a game with a storyline and mission based single player to a single with bots/multiplayer fragfest is silly.

I've only played the STV:EF demo (since I think warez is stealing, but live and let live 🙂) and it definitely has the feel of a good story driven FPS in the Half-Life tradition. The beauty is it comes with a completely separate single/multiplayer DM game similar to Q3A, so you get both genres for the price of one. Check out the review at Avault if you haven't already.

And to the notion that the only good FPSs use id engines I say go play System Shock 2 (modded Dark Engine)or Deus Ex (modded Unreal engine). Yes you can argue they're RPG/FPS hybrids, but you're simply confining your definition of FPSs to the id mold again.

Please stop the Q3 vs. UT discussion! This thread is supposed to be about Elite Force 😉. Now that I´ve played most of the maps, I really must say they are awesome. And those who say Q3 maps are better simply hasn´t played the retail version of the game, with all details maxed out.The official release date is 20.09. anyway. I really recommend this game to everyone, my pick for game of the year 2000 (so far). There´s one mistake you must not make with this game: Don´t play it at normal difficulty level, cause you´ll simply shoot everything without problems and will finish the game quickly, and above all´, you´ll miss all of the tactical elements of the game (I play "hardest&quot😉. The team AI is very good as well, fighting huge battles alongside characters from the series is so cool...Buy this game, I promise you won´t regret it!!! (Raven has promised to add more maps for free in the next days, by the way. Oooh, i gotta go back playing😉
