What is the hole on the back of an M-16 buttstock for? :confused:

cleaning kit. sometimes, depending on the buttstock, a map, flashlight, matches, etc.

Yea, I realized right after I typed "cleaning kit." that a buddy of mine has an AR-15 with an aftermarket buttstock that has extra space for some things. Thought about it, then remembered that Paulie, an Army guy who went to Iraq, said that when he was on patrol that his top kept a map, a tiny compass and a small knife + cleaning kit in his. I asked if this threw off the balance, and he said not really - couple ounces.

My SKS has the same hole - didn't get the cleaning kit, though :(
