Q: what is better, divx encoded file or a svcd file?

I think SVCD is better quality just because of the size. SVCDs are typically larger, but I have seen some pretty good looking divx movies. The main benefit of divx is the compression so files tend to be smaller for the same lenghth of time.
 
Divx... I perfer SVCD because i rather watch it on tv but now that im on 56k i d/l divx now, 700meg file or 1.4 gigs to download... hmmm.
