[Q] Do you think the quality of cartoons has really gone downhill?

I don't watch many cartoons nowadays, so I couldn't really tell ya... but from what I've seen, IMO.. yes.

Most stuff then sucked, too...just that you watched and knew the goods ones.
I'm 19 and still watch Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes, etc.
But crap? On saturday, sure.
But I just got done watching FLCL...not crap. I wish they'd have done dubbing that equaled the subtitles, though. The subtitles don't explain it as explicitly as the dub. Not that a hand grabbing an iron to iron out the wrinkles isn't obvious, but it kinda takes the fun out of it.

WTF is DBZ?

The most dull, unentertaining POS show ever.
No, wait, that's Yu-gi-oh. DBZ is third. Right below Pokemon.
Everyone floats in the air thinking, occasionally throwing a ball of light around, and generally trying to save the universe. Except they take a season to get through a couple days, and do nothing. I've DLed some of the subbed stuff, and while yes, the dubbing is pitiful, it isn't entertaining to me.

Now, Cowboy Bebop...

For the most part, the remakes suck. For instance, the original Batman, TMNT, X-Men, and Transformers were substantially better than the new ones. I really wish a network would start a channel that would exclusively run those and other classics like Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Sonic the Hedgehog, and WITW is Carmen San Diego.

The original Batman is cool, but in a funny way. The early 90s Batman is actually GOOD good.
And yeah, Transformers-pokemon is a shameful rip-off of the good old corny series.
I don't know about those last two, but yeah, Pinky & The Brain rocks.

Totally agree... this current iteration is just plain really bad.

Transformers: Beast Wars, however -- Now THAT was a freakin' cartoon. *Very* well written and excellent animation, I thought. I REALLY wish this would come back on Cartoon Network or somewhere. Anyone got any episodes they would like to share?

Also really into Justice League for pretty much the same reasons. The new He-Man is so much like the original, that it's farily watchable, so I try to catch this as well. (Who am I kidding, my TiVo catches almost every decent cartoon out there for me 🙂 Long live TiVo!!)

When they cancelled Batman/Superman adventures, and Batman Beyond - that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I haven't watched TV regularly since.
<-- Batman fanatic

No, and I'd forgotten about it, but yeah, it was pretty good.

Hehe. I'm not much into JL or He-man, but eh. They beat Big O.

elmer fudd, yosemmittee sam, sylvester & tweety, roadrunner, bugs bunny... classics. I could watch them all day.

dont forget Foghorn Leghorn, damn is that one funny. Also Tom & Jerry are classics. they will always make me laugh.

I watch Tom and Jerry over my lunch break in the break room at work...or MacGuyver, if it's a good episode. When people look at me weird for watching Tom & Jerry I just tell them there's a certain value in mindless entertainment. 😀

i've seen a couple of the cartoons i used to watch and was amazed at how shoddy the animation really was back then. theres a certain nostolgia, and then you see it and wonder how the hell did i like that lol🙂

the new cartoons do suck.....all filled with their special effects....i'd say bring on the 2-d animation.....some of the new cartoons are alright i guess...but i am too tired to think of the ones that i like at the moment....😛

I really liked the earlier dragon ballz but the new stuff is just dumb. The best cartoons of all time in my opinion are Family Guy and Tom and Jerry.

No kidding...

I found one good cartoon...The weekenders...*ducks before someone throws tomatoes at me*

Hey..anyone remember Ronin Warriors...Damn..that was good.

American cartoons has always been crap.

Japanese is the way to go.
Japanese cartoons 10 years back are better than cartoons currently in the US

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, but I think you're being fanboyishly dismissive. You're ignoring some classic series such as Duck Tales, Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, and Exo-Squad.

Even the current crop of cartoons has some standout series, like Jackie Chan Adventures and Samurai Jack. And I'm not even including the "adult" cartoons like The Simpsons and Futurama.

I think all the current day cartoons that are like sort of japanimation totally suck. Most of the time they look so cheesey it's disgusting. I much prefer the cartoons from about 20 years ago. Saturday mornings used to rock. Smurfs, Thundercats, Voltron, Looney Tunes, the list goes on and on. Now all the cartoons are cheap, crap imitations of each other and totally pointless.

Speaking of which, CTN is doing a full series based off Duck Dodgers now. I haven't seen it yet, but how can you go wrong with Duck Dodgers?😛

Well, no Chuck Jones or Mel Blanc, for one thing. But I'm willing to give it a look-see.

In my opinion:
Cartoons peaked at The Tick, Freakazoid, and Animaniacs. They were all about the funny, the only one that attempted to have morals is The Animaniacs when they had thier "Wheel of Morality" which never made any sense what so ever. Freakazoid went out of thier way to make two jokes at a time, one the younger crowd would laugh at, and one only the older crowd would get the reference to. The Random Insanity Factor was high on that show. The Tick, well, that was just classic. Who can argue against killing clone Santas by giving them noogies?

One thing that I saw happen, is a complete lack of effort in the art department. Originality also was lost to the "multicultural" aspect. So many cartoons tried to appeal to everyone that they spent more time working on that then making an entertaining show. The script writers were too busy doing PC duty that they didn't have time to work on gags.

If I wanted a "serious" cartoon, I would've gone for some anime, like "Grave of the Fireflies". (if I had known about it at the time, and it was out). Of course, that's a moot point, because at the time, I DIDN'T. I remember spending some serious time trying to figure out how the spring loaded pie in a box thing could work w/o crushing the pie on the lid.

Some other good ones:
Gargoyles
Batman (the '90s one)

Those two had a story to them.

While we are definitely out of the golden age of cartoons, I think the ones out these days are pretty good. Spongebob Squarepants is one of the best of all time. Fairly Oddparents is really good too, and I also like Yu Gi Oh and Powerpuff Girls. While there isn't a whole lot of selection nowadays, I think the general quality of the good ones now is pretty high. At least better than things were a few years ago. Still nowhere as good as like 15 or so years ago.
