[Q] Are there technologies that will run faster than 56K on a dial-up connection (other than broadband)?

I'm still running 56K dial-up and I was wondering if there are technologies that will run faster than 56k on a dial-up? I know there is ISDN but it costs the same as broadband here. Just curious because I can't justify getting broadband at the moment (to many horror stories about ADSL & Cable ie. service interuptions in my area). You'd think that they would have at least a 128K modem for dial-up since ISDN can do it on a normal phone line. Thanks.

Cheers,

i dont think so. modem technology is out almost. v.92 just came out, but the market now is broadband. besides, connections are still limited at 53k. thats my opinion. isnt isdn need special equipment?

No, there is nothing faster than 56k on an analog line. There should be an incremental upgrade to 56k modems coming soon (already available?) which will increase the upload speed from 33.6k to 43k IIRC. Aside from this, there is nothing else available. 56k modems are right at the Shannon limit (the theoretical calculated limit), and so this is not likely to change in the future.

Heh, I use my Merlin ricochet wireless pcmcia modem to get on the net. I normally get a 128k connection. I use it on my laptop or my ipaq. Exspensive but works great. I even use my VPN and log into my novell servers!
