I was wondering.......... if the "one" ring makes you invisible when you wear it................ why is Suron visible in the prolouge when he is kicking everyones ass???

AFAIK it affects people differently, making some people invisible but for him giving him great power, or whatever.. :p

I thought anyone can get that power that Suron has, except no one knows quite how to use it.

Well, the ring effects different people/races in different ways. It made hobbits invisible and gave them unnaturally long life, but nothing else really. Sauron was the ring's master...he could do whatever he damn well pleases with it :) In the case of what you saw in the movie, he was giving himself some bada$$ strength to knock out swads of Men like they were rag dolls.

If Gandalf had the ring he could use it to do much different things as well, same with Galadriel (in the movie you saw the whole speech about her saying what would happen if she had it... "all shall love me and despair"), but ultimately whatever they wanted to do with it would backfire on them since the ring only has one real master, and that's Sauron.

I have a question to add to the first one. Why does Frodo have such a bad reaction on what he sees when he wears the ring when Bilbo does not ?(I have only read the Hobbit and don't recall seeing such a thing mentioned)

The ring is pretty much all powerful. It will do what you expect (or want) it to. Gollum wanted to be invisible, the ring did that for him. Bilbo got it from gollum, and frodo got it from Bilbo. Both Bilbo and Frodo kinda had the invisible thing on their minds when they used the ring, for obvious reasons.

They could have mastered the ring completely, if they were strong enough, and instead of a dark lord, you would have a SHORT dark lord!

A hobbit? nah, it could never happen. in the case of gandalf and galadriel it is MUCH different. a hobbit could never wield the ring like that...of course this is my opinon and it could be debated :)

Actually, the ring has the power to transport the wearer into the "Wraith-World", a kind of alternate reality in which Elves and other immortal races partially exist. This is why a mortal Ring-bearer appears invisible to others. My guess is that since Sauron was a Maia (a race infinitely more powerful than a mere Hobbit) he was able to use the Ring while not allowing it to fully transport him into the Wraith-World, because he naturally existed in both worlds to some extent.

No, I might have to check that out. :) Kind of annoying all the little details they left out of the movie, though, wasn't it? Luckily, I did not get too caught up in stuff like "why didn't Glamdring glow?", the movie was so great! :D

go buy it. NOW!!! :D

as for the movie, i thought it was great on its own merits and kept the spirit of the story. about as damn good as a 3 hour adaptation could ever be. i just really hope we get to see this 4 hour, 45 minute so called "Dream Cut" someday...

Heh heh... did you see all those playing cards that were posted on TORN that had still images on them that did not appear in the movie? Some of them could have been from the next two, of course, but it looked like there was definitely a lot cut. The gift-giving, of course, but there seemed to be a lot of images of the archers of Lorien and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. I want that "dream cut" now!!! :D

Is this actually true?? I had heard that there was only an additional 40 minutes of material that was gonig to be added...NOT 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I really hope so since this would make the movie more complete (not that I'm complaining about FOTR - I was happy with it). Anyway, does anyone know if Tom Bombadil will be included? in the rumored Dream Cut? I know he's not an essential character (which is why he was cut), but I would be interested in seeing Jackson's take on the matter.

<< Hobbes, see this thread. >>

Thanks kami. I found your thread shortly after I made my post. It sounds almost too good to be true. I guess we'll find out in a few months :)

Why didn't that damn elf just through the ring into the mountain 3000 years ago? The guy didn't have it on his hand yet, so he should have attacked him, and tossed him in if he had too.

Then we wouldn't have this wonderful story and these movies, would we? :p There's thousands of possible explanations but it's pointless to go into them.

<< The Ring wouldn't let Isildur cast it back into the fires. >>

I believe he was talking about Elrond not stopping Isildur from running away with the Ring after he led him into Mount Doom.
