I'm watching the History Channel and noticed that the JSF don't have a spot for a RIO 😕

That cell phone charger is good for the the female pilots who need their cell phone vibrator for long overseas flights 🙂

Yeah, I don't think the plans have ever been for a two-seater.

Training vehicles.

Well yes, but just about any plane can be made with small quantities of two-seaters. Just look at some of the odd stuff the Soviets did to get the second seat in there for training.

Radar Intercept Officer.

There really is no need for 2 pilots in a next generation aircraft. The UNited States military is moving to make its fighting machines less dependent on humans, not more. The last great two seat fighter aircraft was the F-14 Tomcat.

two seater fighters are only trainers these days, except for the dwindling F-14's

modern fighters only need one pilot. They can put the radar screen in a place for the pilot to see and make it easy to understand at a glance, they can project all sorts of info and waypoint onto the HUD, their can be an easy glance-down-and-understand map so the pilot doesn't need a navigator . . radio is good enough for someone at base to help the pilot if he really needs it .. ..

of course, you loose the extra pair of eyes, but you gain manuverableity . . . .

soon, we will have zero pilot fighters. . . .

Those days are coming sooner than we think. The mockup drawing for an almost fully automated aircraft carrier (Corsair I think) is circulating. 200-300 person crew, compared to 5500 and it features an airwing of UAVs

F-15E Strike Eagle anyone? Sure, its primary mission is ground attack, but it can certainly conduct air to air engagements.

The addition of a second pilot drives up the weight of the crew section and increases the training costs of outfitting a unit with pilots and backseaters. The next generation of aircraft will likely have no pilots, let alone a RIO! 😉
