Q about DVD firmware.

So what does these updates do? Do they only add new media that can be burned? If so what's up with that? Do they select which media they like the user to use or what?
😕

Can't speak for all burners, but the Lite-on updates add media and increase compatibility with burner software. Until I updated the firmware on my 411s, Nero6 burned DVDs at .25x speeds. Almost took the dasm thing back to Best Buy.

Well, they can't make it compatible with everything at the beginning since there could be new manufacturers making dvd media. I'm sure there are minor deviations in the manufacturing process among media companies. Who knows hehe.

some actually improve the write abilities to media, as well.

can't write code compatibility for things that are paper release. or not existant

Sure I understand the thing about new media. I thought any DVD media within the same group (-R, +R) were the same and based on a standard.
Basically the hardware is already compatible but it needs tweaking?

manufacturers are different. some have shoddy work and some don't.

ever seen and used crappy unmarked flimsy CD-Rs? compare them to the nice TY CD-Rs .. the quality is there, especially after x amount of months.

Quick Q for Frustrateduser. Which DVD burner are you currently using? Reason I'm asking is that I picked up the Magic Spin 8x+/-R/RW (DVDRW8D) and I heard that certain brands of media are incompatible with this drive due to the lack of firmware updates available. Same prob?......

I tend to look at what the firmware supposedly fixes and if it doesn't pertain to my situation then chances are I won't upgrade.. Why fix what isn't broken at the risk of creating a problem that wasn't there before.. 🙂

I was just asking because there is a new firmware out for it. I have no problems with it and will not flash it.

yeah me too. i wont take a risk if there's nothing the matter.

Yes sid59 is absolutely right.

I wonder what percentage of help requests on anandtech are brought about by people doing upgrades and changes just for the sake of it

The Optorite DD0203 firmware (2.30) helped upgrade 2MB buffer to 8MB buffer.

It also helped burn cheap 2X media at 4X speed.

Sometimes firmware upgrades are beneficial, they make minor tweak, but in my case, major tweaks.
