PXE booting

Well i've got a tablet PC here that has needs an OS, but no cdrom or a floppy for that matter. all that is left is a PXE boot. I have 3 disks here that "claim" to be boot images but when i look inside them, they each contain a 650mb file with a weird extension. furthermore, booting to them using the main computer does not work.

does anyone ahve any experience with PXE booting or should i just waste $30 and buy a pcmcia cdrom?

I don't remember much about this topic, but the idea is a network boot. You put the file(s) on a shared folder or a tftp server and then connect the tablet pc via ethernet to obtain those '650meg files with a weird extension'.

Most new NICs support a PXE boot. If you need to make a disk, you can create one using a 2000 CD if you have one there. Do you have a server set up to host the installation files? On a Windows server, that is served by the RIS service (Remote Installation Services). Not sure what the equiv would be on another server type.

With my experience using PXE with my blade rack, if you make more than $5/hr. and/or value your hair, you'll avoid it if you're just using it for a single installation.

It's good to have the experience with it, and using it on big deployments, but it's a pain otherwise.

I'd spend the $30 on the drive personally. (even knowing how to do it)

/agree

RIS is a neat tool if you are doing large deployments, but it's not worth the time investment to get it set up for a single machine.
